I drug home an 81 J10 (360 727) a couple of days ago and tried to crank it up for the first time this afternoon. I put in a known good battery and turned the key to get two, maybe three very, very slow rotations of the engine. Following that first attempt, all I could get was the rapid clicking coming out of the solenoid. I figured maybe the battery wasn't giving it enough juice (although I pulled it out of a just-started vehicle), so I hooked up cables to another running vehicle and got the same thing. Then I thought the solenoid might be bad, so I pulled one off of my Cherokee and got the same thing. I really have no clue as to the history of this truck, so it's all new to me.
It's worth noting that the under hood and under dash wiring in this truck is one of the worst cases of shoddy PO work I've seen. I'll be making another post about a complete rewire later, but for now I want to just know that the engine runs before I tear the entire harness out and start from scratch. Any ideas on at least a temporary fix to let me get the engine started and letting it run for awhile to see what I am working with? (Can't drive the truck, the rear diff is apart).
Thanks in advance!!
