    Check out my "new" safe!

Recently an uncle of mine passed on some valuable family heirlooms (mostly pistols) and I had no real safe place to store them. On to Craigslist I went looking for a safe. I found this older safe and fell in love with it. This thing must weigh 500 pounds (the door is about 150#s on its own)! It has a 4 digit mechanical tumbler, and works PERFECT. It had 3 coats of paint on it but was originally Olive Drab green, then desert tan, and lastly black. Dude I bought it from was super cool, too. He said he bought it a long time ago and it was old when he got it.

I spent about 2 hours cleaning and lubing all the door parts, then sanded it down to bare metal for paint. The body of the safe just got wire wheeled and painted.

I don't know much about safe's and most of my buddies say it seems like I got a great deal. Looking on ebay for similar safe's that sold, shows some sold for lots of money, some sold for almost nothing. The only markings I can find on it is this number inside the door panel. Anyone know anything about these? I am guessing it's from the 60's?

Hahahaha!!!! That may have been the combo at one time but it is not now! It had a 4 digit tumbler so the combo is ww-xx-yy-zz!

Posting from my phone so I cannot quote you Dave, but you can be assured this will be absolutely coated in stickers. The first one will be a taco-guy I got from this super star sign shop in North Carolina!

Excellent - I'd expect that a good locksmith could change the combination for you. That would be a worthwhile investment, IMO. The seller and maybe others know the combination now. You also need to worry about anchoring it to the floor, walls or whatever. It's heavy, but a thief could haul away the whole safe and work on it at their leisure. You moved it, they could too ...

            brings to mind
the scene in the dukes of hazard movie
where they were pulling a safe down the road with a chain.

and at one point when they stopped, it passed the vehicle.

hope no thieves are that determined for your safe rang.

Wisdom. Hmm.... I am not sure how I am going to do this. The walls are about 4" thick. I can bolt it from the outside but a thief could unbolt it from the outside, too. hmmmm....

Lag it to the slab through the floor. Might even be some holes in it already?
