where do you mount your tachs?

My wagoneer is pretty minty and stock. however, I would still like a tach because I like to monitor stuff.

Was thinking this Autometer mini tach in the glovebox. what da ya think?

I plan on using one from a CJ where the ashtray is. I've already test fit it and will probably use a dremel to cut up a little just to make it fit snug...and then plan to use metal cut to shape to fill in the rest of the gap.

I've always used a mini tach and mounted it to the top of the steering column. All of mine have had the older dash style but you can clock it so that it doesn't obscure the other gauges on the dash.

Anybody have any pictures of a tach mounted? Just looking for idea before I spend money.

never though about using the ashtray.

This is where I had mine and it made it feel pretty natural and by using a screw clamp it didnt make any new holes and wouldnt leave any marks if removed.

Thanks alot for this picture. I was looking at this tach, but just couldnt picture it mounted on the steering column.

i think it would clash to much with my interior.

                tach

I've been wondering the same. Would really like to have a low profile tach to mount on dash, like the musclecar hood tachs. But, since my wag is mint and my daily driver, it would have to "fit " with the interior.....Del

That's exactly where my tach is mounted! When I put it in Drive it goes just between the Speedometer and the AMP gauge.

Build a full length floor console and put the tach in or on that.

Put mine in the glove box door, wanted to put it in the ashtray but after test fitting it was going to involve cutting into the dash as well. I didn't want to do anything that couldn't be reversed. Requires an angled mounting ring that needs to be sanded down to a sharper angle to be viewable in the driver's seat.

TIP: Don't buy an 8,000 rpm tach... I set mine at the 4 cylinder setting to see it actually move. So I'm constantly running 4000-5000 rpm now.

thanks for the suggestions guys. So I shouldn't go for the 8,000 gauge?

I have decided on the Auto meter Z series gauge that JEGS has for about 90 bucks.

They have a 6 grand one and an 8 grand one. What is the average RPM when driving a 360 wagoneer?
