    78 jeep cherokee chief

Looking at parting out a jeep cherokee chief, 1978 model, 360 v8 auto for parts for my 68 J-series.
I can't get to the jeep cherokee chief, to see what is in it.
Can someone tell me what the running gear - diffs, transfer etc - would be on a jeep cherokee chief, 1978 model, 360 v8 auto.
Also is it the same wheel base, door internals etc - in other words is there enough in common that I would be able to use for my 68 J series?

    Thanks for your help.

Trans is the AMC specific cased GM TH400 and the tcase is the Borg-Warner Quadratrac. If in 68 J-series you mean truck, no the truck(120" or 126" or 132" WB) will have a longer wheelbase than the Chero(109") wheelbase. If it's a 68 Wag(110" WB) it's close enough.

The 360 with an auto in 78 would have a TH400 transmission and a Borg-Warner 1339 Quadratrac full-time four wheel drive. The axles would be Dana 44s front and rear. As for swapping parts to your 68 J series, it is doable but not a bolt-in and go proposition. The axles would be the correct width but the front axle in your J is a spring over axle (soa) and it is sua in the Cherokee. Also, the springs are different in the J than what you hav in the Chero so moving of spring perches would be in order. The wheelbases are nowhere close- 109" in the chero and 120" or 126" in your J depending on whether its a J2000 or J3000. The doors could swap from one rig to the other without major problems.

        Thanks for the quick replies.

I should have mentioned, my truck is a J-200.

I thought the Quadratrack was full time 4x4 - the guy with the Chief says it has free wheeling hubs - a knob in the front wheel centre to engage 4x4.

        Thanks again

Quadratracs can be converted to part time operation, where you can turn off the 4WD and run it in 2WD.

Or you can be like the DSPO (Dip "Stick" Previous Owner), put on hubs and then just leave it in E-Drive.

The QTs had an aftermarket kit to change it to a part-time 4 wheel drive. Usually there would be a sticker that went over the vacuum switch in the glove box to show 2WD-4WD instead of Normal and Emergency drive. Make bloody sure you do have a part-time kit before disengaging the hubs; this can ruin the QT in short order. A lot of people mistakenly thought you could just put selectable hubs on the front axle and make it a part-time 4WD and burned up their QT in the process.

most things will swap over pretty easily, but not perfectly, just as a note, the door catches will be different so you will have to swap them if you plan on swapping doors, not too much trouble but it still has to be done.

Door catches didn't change until 79; they will be the same as the 68.
