Guys,

I have access to a free 1990 XJ from one of my wife's co-worker's parents want to get rid of. They claim it had an *electrical fire*. I haven't seen it yet, and have no info on it. I have a 2001 XJ, and love it, but can anyone with *older* XJ experience make any recommendations on what to check in general, and what may have caused the fire?? I know it's free, but I really don't want to put a lot of money or effort into something not worth it. Thanks in advance!

Don't know what the electrical snafu would be in the XJ to light it up? Prolly DPO wiring "upgrades"...
I don't think generally they're as prone to Car-B-Q's as FSJ's are?
Fire can cause a lot more damage than what's visible. I'd be leery of a "free anything" that has had an eng bay fire. As a parts rig I'd go for it for free. As a potential driver? Hmmmmmm? If you want a cheap 90 XJ and willing to travel to LA(the state) drop me an email.

Hehe, thanks, Joe! I don't know really anything at this point. Just seeing if anyone knew of any tendencies toward fires, like ours with ammeters....time to do that conversion!

XJ's are pretty simple. Not as the 70's years. LOL My harness in my 88 fried under the radiator. Found an 89 in yard $15 and about 2.5 hours. If it needs just a harness not to bad at all. Did it just melt wire's or have an flameing fire? Like said before there not know for this but anything can happen with electical stuff. Those harness are very plentyfull around here. Better yet your in the area.

Thumbs up

I had a 90. Excellent year. Not too much that habitually went wrong. You could be really lucky and have the metric ton package -- came with a rear D44!

On the XJ/MJ site, they note the wiring harness troubles so many have had. So, yes, they are known for wiring harness troubles. I don't know what part of the harness is the trouble spot though.

Update....I went by and took a look at the free '90 XJ today. Owners weren't there, but I was in the area. It's great looking, no signs of the fire anywhere on the outside or inside the cab. Red with the black bumpers, tan interior. 4-door, 4WD. I found out later today from their son-in-law that it was running perfectly up to about 6 weeks ago, until the underhood fire. Anyone know anything about any common under-hood fires on these? I know with our 2001 XJ, they installed a debris shield to keep stuff off the intake manifold because of potential fires....
