Tranny of transfer case issue?

Spent months getting mechanicals correct on my 85 GW . When I purchased car it would turn over but not start - finally got it started and it sprang some fuel leaks - fixing that this week - when I went to put in gear and try to run it up ramp on uhaul car transporter it would not go. I moved shifter around and it feels like it is engaging - a friend looked at it and thinks it is the transfer case - any way to test his theory? I topped off all fluids in tranny and transfer case - so that can be ruled out.

Did you check the Hi/Lo lever on the floor under the seat? Make sure the linkage isn't sloppy there as well.

Sounds like transmission to me. I would check to see if the transfer case is stuck in between setting first and check your transmission linkage too. I have experience with the same issue, if there is no engagement and it is going into gear it sounds like the clutches in the transmission are burnt up.

Transfer case

I just went through the same type of issue. After getting my J10 running, it would not move in gear. I found it was the hi/low case was not engaged all the way so I manually pushed the lever toward the rear of the truck and that fixed my issue. I didn't have to remove the linkage as mine is cable driven and it had enough slack for the lever to engage.

Did you manually move the linkage and verify?
