Exhaust smell through heater

I've been fighting with a bad exhaust smell on my '83. The muffler needed re-welding and a tune-up helped a bit. However, I still get bad fumes when I run the heater. If I have the heat slider turned to cold it doesn't smell much. But when I have it set to hot, it smells in the cabin.

What should I be looking for and how should I track it down?

Likely have an Exhaust leak @ passenger manifold.
Should probably find and fix that.

Heater box under hood probably has a large hole in it.
Can fix with fiberglass, or rivet a sheetmetal patch over hole.

I had a pretty nasty exhaust smell that came in every way it could. It was the little flapper valve thingamabob on the passenger side exhaust manifold that had come apart as well as the cat being gutted out and a hole in the muffler... I replaced everything from exhaust port on the heads back

The real culprit is likely the exhaust flange "donut" seals that sit just below the exhaust manifolds. That connection is held on by just two bolts, so it's nearly impossible in my experience to get them sealed properly.

Thanks for the help, I'll start at the exhaust manifold and move on to the heater box if that doesn't take care of it.
