ha ha says it now has a 302 with a 5 speed. If I had to guess it must have been a 258 truck with a 5 speed?

Honestly, the collectability of that truck is not that great right now, and will probably not compete with the chevys and fords of the same year despite it's low production numbers.

I have a 66 Rambler Ambassador (AMCs answer to the Chevelle) that was one of the hottest cars of it's day, but it will never be worth more that 8k, perfectly restored. An Impala or Chevelle of equal condition will always be worth a lot more.

If you want that truck because you want that truck, then buy it! Don't waste your time or money thinking of it as an investment though, you'll just die old, poor, and surrounded by FJSs.

Lots of folks covet the stepsides though, unfortunately, most of them are broke. Including me

I'd like to see said Ambassador. Just for the fact that i love AMC's. My dad was restoring a '66 ambo convertible 287/4-speed car until the garage it was being painted in caught on fire and ruined it. Except for the drivetrain. I like those cars.

Yes its rare and they sell usually higher than the standard J10
I saw also this 1280 figure : i don't know where it comes from, Toledo production numbers ??
                The original powertrains were 258ci L6 + T176 (manual 4 speed) or 360ci V8 + TF727 (auto)
                J10 sportside '81, J10 Golden Eagle '77, Wagoneer '65, Gladiator '64 + parts rigs

I wouldn't call a sportside rare quite yet. There are still many sitting around, but they are desirable if the rear fiberglass fenders are in good shape. Even if they aren't someone could definitely use the bed parts. A couple hundred sounds like a good deal even if its a parts truck.

The most critical parts of the truck are the fiberglass fenders. If they are missing or damaged beyond reasonable repair the value of the truck is about what you quoted if the rest is in good shape(no rust or major damage). The tailgate is a critical piece as well.

What does make it rare is it is the first year the of the Sportside and the only year of the Sportside that had a brow. With a brow it's worth at least $2,000 more than any other late model JTruck... unless you think bald is beautiful.
