Power Steering pump for a 71?

i am trying to replace the power steering pump from my 71 wagoneer with a 360. The thing is i cant find one. My question is can i use the pump from a 73, or what would be my best option.

It appears that you should be able to use the '73 PS pump on your '71.

The parts book shows a different pump for a '71 (4488077) and a '72 (3213992).

I would guess that it's the same as the pump for an AMC car with the 360, and the listing makers just don't have a clue about what's right for a Jeep. RockAuto shows several suppliers for a pump that fits a 1971 360 Ambassador, for instance. These engines were a commodity provided to Jeep for installation in their vehicles, and they would not have varied from the normal passenger car configuration.

RockAuto shows both the early style cylindrical reservoir with a long neck, and the later "canned ham" style reservoir. Which do you have now? Suggest you ask your local friendly parts store to order in a pump for a '71 AMC and compare to what you have. They should let you compare side-by-side - does not cost them anything but time.

I would absolutely not turn in my core until the new pump was installed and demonstrated working.

Maybe you could post a better picture - move back a little and let us see the entire pump and fluid reservoir.


Did you read my post above? Check the AMC car listings on RockAuto. The pump can be separated from the fluid reservoir. This does not look like a Saginaw pump to me. The listing on RockAuto shows both a Saginaw and an Eaton pump. Compare what you have to the pictures at RockAuto.

That is the Eaton Power Steering Pump. You probably can still buy a rebuild kit at NAPA for it. They were on all AMC cars 1966 up to 1971 or 72. Just order one for a '69 Javelin or any AMC car.

You could replace the whole unit with the later Saginaw Pump but you would need all of the brackets as well.
If you change it, I could use what is left of your smog pump brackets.

Does not charge for a core, so it must be a new part. Any parts store could get this if you take these pages to them. Be sure to compare the parts side by side on the bench before you get the box and new part greasy/dirty. Check with the parts store that you can return the pump if it's not right. Or failing that, ask to compare the old and new part at their counter before you buy. (They should help you this way. If they don't because of "policy" or whatever, find another store.)
