    Newb question

I couldn't find the answer here, and I'm sure I'll catch a flame for it, but what is the difference between the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer? The body and mechanicals appear to be the same from what I can tell. Is it just the paneling? Is the Wagoneer more sought after? Also, when you search for FSJ's on CL, Searchtempest, etc. what are the keywords you search? I appreciate any and all information.

    Nope, no flaming here.

Grand Wagoneer's are the fully loaded luxo-cruiser version of our rigs. Almost all that was made 1985 to '91. Although basic or fleet models could be special ordered.

Wagoneer is the name badge for the ones from the start (1963) to late '80's. They were available in different trim levels - from base model to Limited. The Limiteds are typically the most cushy and equipped models - essentially what the Grand Wagoneer would be.

For instance, my 1982 Wagoneer is a Wagoneer Limited - Power everything, woodgrain, all the works. Even a sunroof.

And typically the late '80's Grand Wagoneer's are what are more sought after than the early 'Wagoneer.' Atleast more sought after by the general public. Most of us seem to seek everything FSJ.

As for search terms, Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, Cherokee Chief. 198* Cherokee, 197* Cherokee. Just watch out for the XJ's that try to trick you haha

Hey, I'm used to other forums for my previous vehicles that wanted to give hell if you didn't enter the correct keywords on the search button. I might be one of the younger people in the forum here, but I've always wanted a FSJ. Thanks for your help!

Anytime. I know all about those other forums. I used to belong to a Z-car forum. Those folks can be rough, but we're mostly nice. Most of us anyway.... haha

And anything we can do to spread the FSJ addiction!

The wagoneer name changed to grand wagoneer in 84 with AMC's into of the little XJ cherokees and wagoneers.

                  ..

If you want to see flames I'll start by saying the '76 and '77 Wagoneers with the 401 engines and the TH-400 trannies were the best.

Have a good one ... if you can find it.. Don S..

How about this one - are AMC engines designed to use five or six quarts of oil? Or is it eight? Or four quarts... That always makes for a pleasant argument ha ha

There is actually a facebook group dedicated to the wild stories we hear about AMCs, like the "Chev" 327

FSJ 4 door wagons (in a nut shell) All the same basic body shell
For 1963->1983 Wagoneer (Wrap around tail lights)
For 1984 ->1991 Grand Wagoneer (name change to allow the little XJ to use the Wagoneer name) Used the basic body shell of the 83 FSJ 4-Door Cherokee's with non-wrap taillights. (Likely because the Cherokee stamping dies were not as worn out and it was cheaper to use the Cherokee dies than to rebuild the FSJ Wagoneer dies)
