79 cherokee super chief

just wondering if anyone knows did they make a super chief in 1979? it has the chief badge with an "s" under the chief i bought the running gear out of it for 2 bills i/e engine trans and transfer case i think its a turbo 400 has borg warner transfer case and 401 engine i am hoping i might get the whole thing down the road if he bails on the project--- hows the borg warner as far as strength? i know the turbo 400 will hold up

That would be just a Cherokee S model...nothing super about it. Theres no such thing as a Super Chief as far as I know. The Borg Warner or more commonly known as the Quadra-Trac is pretty strong as long as you keep the fluid under check and make sure the chain is tight. Ive put both of mine through hell and havent had a problem with em.

the super chief was something that a dealer did in california, they took a 4 dr cherokee or wagoneer and put the w/t flares and axles on, but from what i know they only did a couple and called them super chiefs. the bw 1339 is a good tcase they just get some bad words thrown at them because of a lack of maintenance and unobtainable parts.

thx for the info ive been playing jeep for years now and have always used cast iron t cases and trans. not very up on the aluminum cases out there never had one until i happened on the 87 gw i guess i like to keep things
"flintstones" mainly cause its pretty hard to blow up a t18 or np205/dana 300 never played with the 94 yj either its just trading material

The "S" stands for sport. It was the next step up from a standard model.
