best towing option for boat with J10? Unlock hubs?

Hello:

I have a 1980 J10, manual tranny, etc.
I'd like to pull my boat with it. The load is about 1500 lbs. It is rather hilly where I live, but the boat launch is only 1-2 miles away.

What is the best way to pull it without causing too much wear on the clutch? Can I put in 4-wheel high, and not lock the hubs to and from the launch, and then lock the hubs when I pull in out of the water?

Any advice much appreciated!

Huh? Only use 2WD, except on the boat ramp.

Leave the hubs locked in until you are on the highway. Use low range if you need to to haul the boat up the ramp. Driving straight ahead, you won't get any bind-up in 4WD, and the low range will make towing the boat much easier. When you get to the top of the ramp, shift into 2WD.

About how fast without causing too much wear, can you drive pulling the boat in 2WD with hubs locked? 55 mph too fast?

When it's in 2WD it won't hurt anything. It will just turn the drive line in the front end. You could drive at any speed. Lock in the 4WD when you get to the ramp then unlock when you leave you could leave the hubs lock all the time as long as it isn't in 4WD for the drive home.

If you can't make it better why waste your time. No use repeating the orignal mistakes. I'm to old to push it that's why.

No damage is caused by locked hubs. Just a minor fuel consumption penalty
