New project: Sitting Blue Heap (now running)

Well, I have decided to officially start working on the Jeeps. I think for right now I am going to call the project Sitting Blue Heap (SBH for short). Here is a background for anyone who doesn't know about this.

I am starting with my original FSJ: "The Heap" PB090058.JPG

The Heap's body has seen better days. Although I think Oak and I did a great job of painting it. We spent countless minutes preparing it and getting it just right. We are parting out the body from this one. I hope to clean up the frame, running gear and everything that will stay. Replace all the hoses and lines and get it ready to recieve this one:

PB090051.JPG, PB090052.JPG

The blue jeep was owned by Sitting Bull (from this site) A few years ago he sold the body to a member of our local club and this jeep (a 79) was put on a 87 Wag's frame. A full write up was in FSJ magazine a year or so ago. The guy that bought it and took it home did not finish the project so I was able to buy it. I am hoping that by taking this 79/78 body and putting it on my 79 frame it will be much easier.

I'm not holding my breath.

The guy that originally did the work on the body did an amazing job on the body and interior. He had actually done a complete disassembly on it. The drivetrain that used to be under it was great also. It went to his new project.

Oak and I finished taking the top off last night. He was very excited about having a convertible. Too bad it'll be a frame only soon . It's for the best though. We are taking it apart like this so we can fit it on the trailer and we are taking off any good pieces that we may be able to sell so we can pay for this project.

Here are the pics of the donor frame (the heap) so far.

Well the body is off now. We are down to the starting point. First a moment of silence for the old body...

Heap of Heap.JPG

Now here's what we have:

bare front.JPGbare rear.JPG

Everything on the frame looks good. I haven't seen any rust yet and except for huge amounts of dirt I am in good shape. I believe we are going to start in the back and work our way forward. Clean everything we come to then prime and paint. All hoses, and hard lines will be replaced. Wiring will be taken on an as-needed basis.

Which grill are you asking about? The blue one has a Razor grill and the green one had a Rhino. I still have both of them. The Rhino will probably go on the blue one and the Razor will probably go onto our Wag.

Just so you know, you can make either of them fit your jeep with out too much trouble.

Well it's been a long time since I had an update. To be honest I haven't been able to work on the jeep much until the last month or so. Here are some pics of where I was a couple of weeks ago. Since these pics were taken I have replace the brake and fuel lines and painted them. I had to fix a small place on the gas tank. I'll try and get some pics up next week with the brake lines and fuel lines on there. All of the lines will be either blue or black depending on what they are mounted to.

Hopefully I will be able to have a WOT next month and move the body over.

WOT pics

Well we had the WOT this weekend. There were about 10 guys from the Atlanta area that came by and worked. The body was swapped over and we worked on the engine a little bit. I ended up the day a lot closer to being finished than we started.

Well, I finally uploaded the pics.

Well it also has a pretty new coat of paint. It's been sitting now for probably 3 years since the last WOT when we took it from it's original frame. Hopefully I'll have it moving in a couple of months.

Yep, I think he is. That is him in the last picture. I tried to trade it back to him for the Scramblineer but no go. He is going to help me put the engine in in the next couple of weeks and then hopefully it'll be ready to move.

Well, Blue hasn't been washed or waxed in about 3 years. So I imagine that that would probably make it look a bit nicer.

Well, finally I've been able to start doing some work on Blue again.

Engine and Tranny - all mount bolts finished.
Exhaust - connected to engine. Still need to re-weld the rear half back on.
Tranny shift - bushings replaced and connected.
e-brake connected
took off some of the front engine accessories and cleaned it up. Still need to put on new intake and carb, remount all cleaned and painted accessories.

Still need to go through and check all of the body mounts. I know a few of them are not secure. A few of the capture nuts will need to be re-fastened or held.

Brake systems needs to be tied together and finished

I still need to figure out the bumpers. I may just buy some material and make some simple ones.

Lots of little odds and ends. I'm hoping to do one or two things a day and knock the stuff out.

Well most of the stuff is taken care of now so I went out today and tried to get it to turn over. No luck. I went to the front and tried to turn the motor by hand. No luck. The engine has been sitting for about 6 months but would turn over before it was taken out. One of my concerns is breaking the bolt off. How hard is that bolt to break? Is there anything that I am not thinking off that may be holding it up. FYI I have taken all of the belts and the pulley off the front. Also the tranny is in N.
