88 Grand Wagoneer fuel tank size

So, I was driving yesterday and started to lose power. If I let it idle...she would still move...but any gas at all and she would fall flat on her face. Looked at the gas gauge and it was just under 1/4 tank (and my gauge is not accurate...reading 3/4 tank at full). I knew this was the furthest I had driven on a tank of gas...but not by a lot.

So, I quickly found a gas station and filled up. Sure enough...add fuel and all is happy again. What surprised me was it only took 11.5 gallons. I know it was full, cause I could hear the gurgling in the tank fill and vent lines.

So, apparently, I do not have the stock tank? I only have a 12 gallon one??? What else could cause this? New fuel filter, new fuel pump, all new fuel lines.

20.3 gal. Good chance the fuel sock/filter fell or rotted off the pickup tube in turn shortening the pick up so's you can get the last few gallons out. The PU tube is part of the sending unit plate. I'd pull it it out and look at it.

They hold about 22 gal. When I bought my '89 I couldn't let it get below 1/4 tank or it would run out and it was the pick-up strainer that was at fault. I would bet the strainer sock on the end of the pick up tube is either torn or has fallen off.

Exactly. The fuel sender is located below an access plate which is under the rear seat on the driver's side.

Well, I have a replacement sending unit...and now have a reason to replace it...

Yes it is. Unfortunately, I have a habit of hording parts I will need for future work...then I rarely have the time to get the work done. Found neighborhood kids playing in the garage the other day...and all my parts and stuff are scattered everywhere. Not even sure what goes where now...

I know for sure my 1991GW will hold over 19.7 gals.
Pumped that into it one day after driving it to the ga$ station.
