1968 J3000 original color question

Looking at purchasing a 68 J3000. Owner claims the black paint is original. Anyone confirm black was an option in 68'?
Thanks

Check the firewall for the paint code, that'll tell you what the factory color was.

In this era, the paint code would appear on a foil tag glued to the passenger side of the firewall. Sometimes they are still there; more often the glue has dried out and the tag is lost.

I can't say for certain, but IME gloss black and gloss white have always been available. If they were not in the regular list, they were in the fleet colors list. Any dealer could order from the regular or fleet colors list. Colors came and went from the regular list (depending on fashion) but the fleet list was fairly constant.

This Ditzler page shows Raven Black as available every year 1957 to '71. http://images.tcpglobal.com/chips/1968-Jeep-pg03.jpg

It was not a regular option
Maybe available as a special order or a fleet order ?
According to jeep bulletins, regular optional paints for a 68 J2000 or J3000 were :
- empire blue
- bronze mist
- spruce tip green
- gold beige
- glacier white
- president red
- prairie gold

I recall fleet colors were easily available. I was not around Jeeps in '68, but I don't think this changed by the 70s when I was there. The dealership ordered the cars, and put a color code on the order. The fleet colors had a code, just like the regular colors, and were available ... though not advertised in the sales brochure. There were no other restrictions on picking a fleet color AFAIK - no added cost or secret handshake needed.

Infos are scarce for the fleet colors in the sixties but i agree "raven black" was certainly one of them, codes 21 or 349 according to the parts catalog
