    Deep Transmission Pan

Anyone using an aftermarket deep aluminum pan on their TF? I'd like to, but when I was changing the motor oil this evening in the GW it looked as though access to the pan bolts would be severely restricted by the trans cross member and a deep pan.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

Most deep pans will hit the crossmember.

I have a TCI deep pan and it clears the cross member. Tricky to get a few bolts in though.

I have a brand new one in the dining room. Too pretty to install.

Based on my calibrated eyeball and pictures online, I thought a +2 qt pan (like the TCI) would fit. The +3 and +4 qt pans look like they just hang down too low and would require moving/modifying the x-member, and likely not the best for off-road.

@dan1488 - How tricky are the bolts. Do you have to unbolt the trans mount and jack the transmission, or does it just require regular tools and some swearing?

@HOOT - These wonderful parts only do good things after you install them. Simply possessing them does not make an FSJ any more awesome. Did you get the TCI also?

          Thanks

I put a 2 quart Hughes pan on my '89 and had to drill one extra hole in the crossmember to get one of the allen bolts on. Other than that with long allen wrenches- T handle style, you can reach all the others through the factory drilled holes . Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics but this is what the clearance looks like. I did chamfer or round off the cooling ridges close to the crossmember which helped with clearance for the installation. Otherwise once on there was plenty of room. I did not do anything else to get this pan on- too lazy to jack up the tranny or drop the crossmember. No problems and it cured my leak.

@ MarkJ - Thanks for the detail and the pics. That's just what I wanted to know. I also have a leak, so I figured I could get a few benefits from a good aftermarket aluminum pan. The socket head cap screws would make clearance a little less of an issue.

It bolts right up no jacking with the transmission, just some swearing with one or two bolts.

Don't remember what brand now. It came from Bulltear. Has the cooling tubes and stuff. At least a 4 qt. pan. this Jeep is a street Jeep for the most part and hanging low is not a problem. The Thorley Tri Y's hang lower than the pan will. I never installed it because the truck got wrecked right after I got it. The tranny wasn't acting right before the wreck either. I didn't want it to go through an install just to be taken back out and reinstalled so it went to the goodie pile. Soon the whole set up is going into a new frame and I'll install it then along with the 8qt oil pan and a truck load of other stuff.

I got one of those stickers last week. Do ya' think it would help me pass emissions, too, or do the stickers just enable faster speediness and more Em Pee Gees?

From what I recall there was some fine print on the back of the stickers that mentioned any actual increase on MPG would vary according to your latitude and the earth's axis in relation to the seasonal equinox.

Mopar makes a deep stamped metal tranny pan with a drain plug for the 727.

Part number is P3690730-AB Cover 55-210-000

I bought one for $71.65 CAN. If you get a nagging tranny leak afterward, check the dipstick tube o-ring...don't ask me how i know. I dropped the cross member to install the pan.

I ended up going with the cheapest aluminum pan I could find. The 'no logo' Summit pan shown below:

Free Shipping - Summit Racing™ Aluminum Transmission Pans with qualifying orders of $109. Shop Automatic Transmission Pans at Summit Racing.

Looks just like the Trick Flow pan and has a similar part number, but costs $20 less. Seems to fit well, very similar to the pictures in Mike J's post. I may end up modifying the trans cross member or making a new one because it kind of blocks the drain plug.
