EDIT* Pictures now up thanks to MNEWXCV
I have had my eye on a 1980 Jeep Cherokee Laredo that has been for sale on and off for about two years. It's black with black interior and in pretty good shape inside and out. The flares are rusted pretty bad but looks good otherwise. Anyway, the owner originally wanted 3k for it which was a little steep for me with the rust-but I went to look at it anyway. That was September 2009 and the owner had to bail because the ignition broke and left him stranded...lol. I bought another Jeep and never went to see it.
He emailed me a few months later and said that it was fixed and was I still interested? I said that I bought something else and would pass. Move forward to last October I saw it back on Craigs List for 2k and decided I would go see it. I went and he couldn't get it started-dead battery, weak starter, bad solenoid...lol- he was embarrassed. It has been in his family forever and has records for everything including newer engine/tranny rebuilds etc. Nobody drives it anymore and he doesn't have time to mess with it. He assures me it runs and drives great. I offer 1k assuming I can hear it run. He decides to get it running himself and passes on my offer.
Then in late December he calls and says if the offer still stands I can have it. Really nice guy by the way. I went down there last week, threw a new battery in it and got it running in no time-starter was pulling too much juice but got it running. Took it for a spin and was amazed-drives fantastic and has lots of power compared to my J-10 or 89 Grand Wagoneer. I attribute it to the 4 bbl edelbrock on the Cherokee. Both my other Jeeps have their stock 2 barrels. So I buy it, he's really sad to see it go. Drive it home and have a blast hitting the gas on the highway-so much power and sounds great. Runs nice and cool and holds excellent oil pressure by the way. Get it home and start going through the paperwork he gave me. Dates all the way back to 1988. I see the receipt for the 360 getting "freshened" in 1991 with a new crank, heads, and seals. Then I see a huge receipt from 1994 when the tranny was overhauled and the 360 was replaced with a new 401! What I say??? I go outside underneath and sure enough 401 stamped on the block. I am so excited about this Jeep now
