Part Id and how does this fit.

The part I am having a problem with is the Flat metal spring that is shown in the Dana 20 U-Shift parts diagram. It is not listed as a part and it has no part number. It is pictured in the parts manual in-between the Torsion spring and the Torsion Spring retaining rod. What does this part do and how is it positioned in the shifter housing?

Here is a link to the picture.

Also how do the shifter shims work? Is there a measurement to be made adding and subtracting shims or do they serve another purpose?

Anyone have any ideas here? It doesn?t seem to fit in the vertical orientation shown in the parts diagram.

Wow I guess I was confused by the arrow placement. It didn’t look like it was labeled in the photos. Do you know how it fits into the shift case? I tried to place it as shown in the manual picture but it didn’t fit vertically like that. I ended up placing it horizontally on the opposite side of the torsion spring. Is this correct?

Any idea how the shims work? Is there a measurement or way to judge how many to place in the shifter?

That's the drawing from the factory service manual. The arrow is wrong - "anti-rattle" should be pointing to the flat spring. That's the PN that Hagar gave you. (From your reply, seems you understand this).

I can look at the parts book later, but I suspect it does not show any better there. From its name, I expect the shifter will still work without it, but rattle. I encourage you to attempt again to fit it in on the workbench.

I've got two complete assembled U shift housing assemblies and no time to take one apart and help right now.
            Sorry

Hagar: if you get a chance will you let me know how this anti rattle spring is placed in the shifter box?

Anyone know how the shims are used. I have three in now but do you add or subtract to get a certain amount of tension in the shifter stick or what is the procedure?

The shims are most likely there to take up slop from where the mill stopped milling when manufacturing the part. So I would put them all back when you get the spring situation sorted out. I believe I have a couple shifters in the storage container and will check tomorrow. I can pop one apart enough to see. I will post up if I can find an answer.

Sorry so long to get this posted. This shifter I found in storage functions normally while some I had had broken springs.

The plate is for tension on the shift rail. Here is one in place. In the top of the picture.

180 degree view, the spring loads up against the shifter under tension.

                  Hope this helps....

Perfect! Thanks for taking the time to post that. Luckily that was the spot I put my flat spring. It seemed to be the only way it would fit.
