Exhaust manifold bolts w/ end holes?

What's with the holes in the end of 360 exhaust manifold bolts? I saw something on this some time ago and can't remember what the answer was.

The only thing I can logically come up with is to allow for expansion without breakage.

Or they are pre-drilled for an 'easy out'.

I told My Dear Son that they're special lightweight racing bolts.

I'd guess that having open space in the center allows thermal movement to happen somewhere other than at the threads. So far, I've not had one of these break or back out significantly, and can't say the same for grade 8 or grade 5 solid screws in that application.

I thought the same about being predrilled for easyouts, but I have 2 heads that have them broke off flush with the face and the hole does not go that far into them. I still had to drill it for the easyout.

I think SJ's answer sounds more reasonable.

Wonder if a bolt can be substituted with a stud, like various others do it. Can't see any reason why not.
