Do we need these Air filter spacers, or does our stock filter bolt on?

In the yards I noticed all the GM Throttle bodies have these funky space things on them between the throttle body and the air filter. Do I need it if I want to run my stock air filter?

Unneeded but better off using it.
With a carb style air filter, anything you can do to straighten out airflow as it gets to the carb will help - though more at higher RPM than off idle.

Back when I had TBI, I had to use that spacer to get clearance for the injector pod. Without it, the top of the injector pod would hit the underside of the air filter cover, preventing me from fully installing it.

Late model FSJ air cleaners will fit on a TBI with no issue. Some of the earlier air cleaners need a spacer.

I did the Howell TBI from BJ's on my 1989 and had to use a plastic spacer kit from Autozone to clear throttle linkage.

Are you sure you have a stock air cleaner? I can easily fit my index finger in between the throttle lever and the bottom of the air cleaner at all points in it's travel. I'm using the stock air filter and a stock GM TBI from a Howell kit.

I guess the real answer is just try it without a spacer and see if it works. If you need it or feel that it improves the airflow path, then do it.
