baby jeep tire pressure gauging tricks?

Got new shoes today - slightly narrower rubber....in the past i always lowered all 4 to 31 PSI then rubbed chalk over the tread and drove around a bit and noted the wear pattern then made adjustments till i was satisfied.

is the a better way to do this? may way is old school but perhaps there is a new way?

I have a stable full of Jeep cherokees (XJ's) and run 31" tires at 30psi.
