    what makes a Cherokee a chief

    like the title state I just bought a 83 cherokee. its a narrow track that was a forest service jeep vinyl floors, standard trans, manual windows, only option was ac no emblems at all I had someone call it a chief today but was unsure that they were correct

      My chief had emblems, carpet, clock, passenger oh sh_t handle, back side windows had open vents, electric rear window, ...

        The magic smoke they put in at the factory....that's actually what the "S" stands for. Actually, many of the NT in the late 70s also had the chief badges. Even the 4-door cheros had the cherokee S badge. By 83, you either got the Laredo or the base model. No badges= base model. As lobie stated above, there were other subtle differences. Clock, vented rear windows, handle, electric rear window, carpeting, carpeted panels in rear. you could get the laredo with the either V8 or 258/6. I think power windows was an option.

        Still, a Forest Service vehicle is sweet! Tried and tested. got pics? is is yellow and green? Tan and Brown? I'm waiting to see this thing. Much cooler than a regular chief.

              I\'ve seen gsmikie\'s video for the TH400 and thought it was just awful.watching a guy tear down a greasy pile of metal in a junkyard. it dosent have to be surrounded by water to be an island

                    Chiefs were 2-door wide tracs that said "Cherokee Chief" on the side in big huge letters. If it didn't have the letters it's not a Chief. The Indian stripes are for the "S" model available on pretty much any Cherokee of the era.

                      People call Full Size cherokees "chiefs" just like they call all J10's and J20's "Honcho's".

                        Concerning the availability of the "chief" package :
                        83 : wide track
                        81,82 : wide track or 4 doors NT
                        75 1/2-80 : wide track
                        Except the stripes and two tone paint thing the package will include bucket seats, sport steering wheel, chrome bumpers for the first years and a few more minor items
