Question about a 79 cherokee (looks to be a cheif)(d300 question)

Ive got a chance to buy a 1979 cherokee, white/with black trim, looks like its got fender flares so i imagine its a w/t the guy says its got a 258/4spd with a dana 300.

My question is this an actual dana 300
and what gear ratio do you think the axles are?

Should be a Dana 20 and 3.54 gears more than likely.

'Course 79-80 was a changeover year, so could be a NP208. Or something else could have been swapped in.
The D44 should have a tag with the ratio on the cover bolts and the AMC 20 (round cover) would have a code number stamped into it.

It should be a Dana 20 transfer case.

If you are buying this to part out, I would like to call "dibs" on the steering wheel!!

One possablity, however remote, is that someone
in the know and hard core enough did a 80 Scout
                D-300 swap. (1980 Scouts had a texas pattern D300
same as the D-20 case) They are pretty rare given
it was the last year the Scout was produced.

Look at the type of metal the output housing of the transfer case is made of. Iron = Dana 20, aluminum = Dana 300.

The texas-pattern 300 is pretty scarce; if you have one, it's worth more than the whole truck.

I would be up for the complete steering colume . I am going to a floor shift and would like a colume without the auto shifter.

ok so back to top cause i got a new question, i talked to the guy and he sent me a pic of the tcase, it is a d300 and he said if he remembers right the tcase was already in the rig when he got it, and he sourced out a tranny for it from a cj style jeep. so my question is, ive got the th400/dana 20 setup from another rig, if this d300 is a cj style d300 will it still bolt up to the d20 style adapter? in other words, can i still pull the th400/d20 adapter out of my xtra tranny and install it in my th400 w/qt and hook up my d300 to it?

here is a pic of the tcase

The Jeep D300 uses the circular New Process pattern and is not compatible with earlier transmissions without an aftermarket adapter. The Jeep D20 is the so-called "texas" pattern; not compatible with the NP pattern. So, nothing here is compatible. The TH400/QT is unique, and the Jeep D20 and D300 are different.
