    third brake light?

Hey folks! i just got done messing with the brake lights on my 89. YOu can read about all my joy right here.

Anyway, my waggy has a center brake light hanging from the roof, right behind the window. But it has never worked during my ownership.

Anyway, as i was working on the rest of the tail light situation, I could't help but notice how cheesy all of the center tail light wiring is. It got me wondering if these ttrucks even came with a center tail light from the factory? I remember that when I was in HS, my dad added a center brake light to our station wagon because the Insurance company gave you a discount. Is that what I have on my waggy?

    Thanks!

      well

If it's break light only you will have to run a wire from the brake pedal switch to the back. Mine has an after market unit withturn & brake capabilites & it can be connected at the rear. The Circuit for the brake lights at the rear also have the turn signals on them. it you hook up a brake light only to them it will flash. you can do that but brake only will require the mod mentioned.

Yeah, that's how mine is. They put some holes in the headliner. But the wiring is seriously cheesy. It looks like they finished off three different spools of wire just to get from one end of the waggy to the other. Not to mention the lens on the lamp melted. I'm inclined to just pull out the wiring and call it a day on the third brake light. What a piece of junk.

I've heard that you can get a ticket if the third brake light is present, but doesn't work....

Might be better to remove it.

I use an LED one that plugs into the trailer hitch. Works pretty good.

An 89 has a separate circuit for the brake light and is NOT part of the turn signals. So you can wire up your 3rd brake light directly to the brake light signal going to the housing.

The older (84 and older?) FSJ's have the integrated brake/turn signal lights.
