I WON THE LOTTERY TODAY!!!

Not really, but it feels like I did! I just passed CA Smog test on the first try!!! HELLLZ YEAHHH!!!!

Then on the way home, I passed a shop that always has this white G-Wag outside. I asked if it was for sale a few years ago (even before I bought my Chero) and he said no. Now there's a late 70's J10 outside so I stopped and asked about it. I guess a local guy Just bought it and it needs a smog pump, diverter valve, etc. Hey! Funny you should ask! I have a set that is officially available today!!!

I still don't understand why vehicles over 25 years old need to be smogged...
How many people do they expect, are going to daily drive antique vehicles? In the general sense of things, very little. So you'd think that there would be very little impact on the environment from it.
All the stupid rules and regulations too. Some things (modifications) that would make it (the car) more efficient are illegal and yadda yadda yadda. You guys got it to tough. It'd be classic car hell for me. None of mine would be legal...

Good for you rang! Hopefully you get it back on the road asap, and that your rebuild/mods goes smooth.

Kal used to have the 20 or 25 year rolling thing but they froze it back in the 90's at '75ish or newer needing the checks.

The rolling exemption is still on the books but you have to register/insure your rig as a collector. We talked about it here:
http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=183419

The open rolling exemption was killed when we had the governator.

I say this at least 4 times a month: I don't mind smogging my cars. I just hate the visual inspection. What does Commifornia care if I have exhaust manifolds or headers if what comes out the tailpipe is clean.

I never have had to smog my 1980.

Now is the time to follow the advice I previously post about smog exempt in Calif.

I agree. The quality of the exhaust should be the priority. I would think they would want to reward people who update older equipment with newer and more efficient parts.

Seriously! I plan on running cats not because I have to but because it's a small price to pay to reduce CO and unburnt fuel emissions. In commiefornia I believe that would be illegal because it's not factory... because god forbid your emissions suck less than original...

Thankfully I'm exempt for smog in WA, I was worried about my mini cooper passing though... it's extremely modified (bigger turbo, full exhaust, FMIC, custom tune, ect) and has 1 less cat than oem... turns out the relatively high flowing one I replaced both of the old ones with does good enough,

You are correct. If your rig did not have a cat from the factory, it is not smog legal to add one. Likewise, if you had one cat it is not smog legal to add a second cat. If you had a 2.5" cat from the factory, you cannot up it to a 3" or down to a 2.5". You also have to a CARB legal cat. All this means there are literally 2 CARB stamped, 2.5" replacement cats available for a FSJ in CA. Getting a CARB designation is expensive so the manufacturers pass those costs on to us. Where a 49 state 2.5" single in/single out cat may be $60. In CA that cat will cost us $100+. It is illegal to ship a 49 state cat to California so we can't just order the 49 state cat and install it our selves because no one will ship them to us.

Now, with all that said, I have bought 49 state cats from Nevada when driving through and installed them at home. I also bought some 49 state cats before CA outlawed shipping them here and have installed them. I have never seen a smog tech lay under a car and inspect the cat. I have seen them kneel down and make sure there is a cat installed but never actually check them.
