    Tailgate window chrome trim

I have seen some Wagoneers that have a chrome strip that surrounds the tailgate glass (this strip actually is connected to the glass, goes up and down with the glass); mostly early Wagos. You can see it on the tailgate of this years Jeep Easter Safari Wagoneer (look through the windows at the tailgate glass

I think this trim looks really nice and I kinda want one.
    1) Anyone know if the glass is any different than our later model glass?
    2) Is the seal on the body that the glass sits in (when the window is closed) any different than our later model ones?
    3) I assume these are factory. Are they optional or were they just on early rigs?

I have heard the glass is thinner, but never verified.
Earlier seals were different, but nobody makes them, and a good used one is extremely unlikely anyway.
The late seal works fine in an earlier rig.

I had an early back window, but sold it couple years ago.
Do still likely have one or two pieces of the glass trim though.
Guess I could simply measure that...

The trim is stainless steel not chrome plated. I have seen the trim as late as 1974.

The early glass is indeed thicker. This true for all the door glass and I believe the windshield as well. My best guess is the thickness change occurred sometime around 1978.

We just started working on my '74 tailgate yesterday. Mine has the stainless trim. The glass measured 1/4" thick, don't know if it's stock or a replacement though. There is 1 screw per side at the base that attaches the trim to lift bar. Other than that, I guess it's suppose to be glued to the glass, which mine wasn't. Anyone know what kind of glue is needed? There is a rubber insert in that stainless trim....

It didn?t appear to be glued on my ?65 or my ?73.
But who knows if they left factory that way?

I have an old service manual, maybe mentioned in there?

I have one too. I'll take a look but I don't think it mentions it. I do know that mine pulls off the top real easy so once the new rubber is in place, I think it'll just tweak and bend it. Don't wanna do that since it's not bent at the moment.

Maybe add a strip of double sided foam tape in there?

              Might hold it better...?

Maybe. Hard to say at this point. But that link you sent was 1/4" thick which is way too much. Paper thin is what I'll need. I have that at the shop too.

I think the PO super glued a portion of that trim. I can't scrap the residue off the glass in one spot.

                  I think it's 1/4" across and 7.6 mil thick...

That sucks! Is it (residue) at least in a hidden area?
