Cruise vacuum question

Can anyone explain the purpose of the vacuum dump valve for the cruise operated by the brake? I understand the function of removing the vacuum from the servo. The reason I ask is because my valve has failed. I plugged the hose under the dash and the cruise still works the same and disengages electronically when the brakes are used. Is the valve a redundancy? Should I run it this way? Anyone have a part number for the valve itself?
