    American Motors Key Blanks

So, my original set of keys is starting to wear out. I would love to find a set of American Motors blanks. I bought a set on ebay and it ended up being for an earlier Grand Wagoneer. The only blanks I can find have the Chrysler Pentastar and Jeep on them.

fleabay has them sometimes but you have to be careful they are not all the same, there is a letter code on them ( like J ) so your originals have to match.....ask me how I know

For an 88GW? Since Chryco bought out AMC in Aug 87, doesn't surprise me the keys are stamped Chryco.

Tripwire, sounds like you found out the same way I just did. The door keys work well...ignition key not so much. And, for the late model GW, the code is J.

Joe, it is funny. The keys I received when I bought the rig (I was told they were the "original keys". One set is stamped American Motors and the other is stamped with the Pentastar and Jeep.

Let me look around and see what I have. I have extra blanks for our 78, not sure if they will be the same.

AMC was pretty much completely absorbed by Chrysler prior to the 1988 model year. The Jeep pentastar keys are probably correct for your rig.

Looked at the blanks I have and they are all aftermarket. Like WH said, BJ's had them, not sure if they have any left.

Do you all have your keys made at a dealer? Can they do that?

Or just copy the worn out originals and hope for the best?

Mine was so worn, it finally wouldn't work in the ignition. I've got AAA. They came out, pulled the steering wheel and ignition, rekeyed it.

I also pulled one door cylinder, took it to locksmith, got new master to match.

I've gone to local Ace to have copies of both made, no issues.

I was lucky enough that one of the original sets was taped to the owner's manual. Those were perfect so, I took them to my local hardware store for them to cut the blanks.
