    Fuel Tank

FYI I live in California and am subject to bi-annual emission inspections. I have a 87 GW that has some small splits at the top of the fuel tank. I noticed it when replacing the sock and float mechanism about six years ago. Foward to two years when I last had it smogged, the tech said it failed the test becuase the air leakage (or something similar) was at a greater rate than what was allowed. Now it's time to smog it again and I'd just like to replace the tank. What are my choices? How different is the new poly tank (for older FJ's) from BJ's than my current one?

Just so's ya know the older pre-80 era steel tanks are a completely different shape and mounting configuration regardless if new replacements are steel or polly. Point being a pre-80 design polly replacement tank will not fit into your 87. If you need a tank for an 87 regardless of brand or vendor you choose buy one for your model year 80-91.

That Evap test is a killer.

If it were my rig, I would start watching craigslist for someone parting a GW out. There is almost always one up around the LA/Orange County/IE/Ventura/San Diego area (I don't see any right now, though). There are also shops around here that will weld them shut if there are only a couple holes and there isn't other rust.

Really did'nt want to deal with a used one. I've called around a few places and that seems to be the consensus; used.

I?ve never seen a bad one, they?re very thick.
You sure you?re not just looking @ mold marks?
Generally they leak @ grommets for vents, or rotten vent hoses.
Seriously doubt anyone has changed them and probably all that?s wrong?

The bad used ones have been in high heat areas with alcohol and other additives that mess with the integrity of the poly tanks.
Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental.

BS...left one baking outside in sun for YEARS unprotected, zero damage.
