    Painted GW overhead console?

On my get-to-it-someday list is to deal w/ the stained wrap on the overhead console of the GW. Easiest, most correct route is to just redo it with the correct material.. but has anyone painted theirs to match the exterior color? Would like to see what that looks like.

    Thanks.

When I redid my headliner I had extra material for the console. It was pretty easy and the old adhesive was stubborn even with remover, which would have made painting difficult.

When I did the overhead console in my J10 & J20, I removed the fabric, brushed off the foam that would come off, the used brake cleaner to get the adhesive off. Then I used rattle can bed liner on it. After the bed liner dried, I used truck & van paint in burgandy ( close to the cordovan color) from Advance Auto. When it dried, it looked like vinyl. I like the way it looks better than the headliner fabric, and after a couple of years, it won't sag either. I don't have any pics as of yet, but I can take some if you want to see it.

When I got my 90GW the headliner was sagging, so I pull it down and pulled all the mat'l off sanded the headboard a little to knock the adhesive down so it had a texture look and painted it the same color as it was. On the console I clean the adhesive off and painted it also. There wi9ll be some extra hole in the console. I will see if I can find some pictures. Ther is part of the headliner in the rear of the wagoneer

Here's one I installed in my XJ awhile back, same console as the FSJ. I removed the fabric then the foam and glue and it came out nice.

Does anyone know which "Chrysler" minivans these came in? Lots of GW literature indicates that the overhead consoles on models from 89-91 were borrowed from minivans from those years. My 1988 needs a new headliner, I'm thinking while I'm up there I might install a console if for nothing else but additional storage.

I don't know about the console, but I have a good headliner out of a 89 GW
with the cutout already in it.

They apparently were adapted over from the overhead console that was in the Town & Country minivans. A better source would be the '88-'91 era XJs, as some years had the same console.

And as an FYI -- there really isn't any storage space in the overhead console. There is a sunglasses holder that isn't really wide enough for any sunglasses, and the other compartment is for a garage door opener. That door has to be popped open with a coin or a paperclip -- it only swings in so it can operate the garage door opener when you press on the door.

Since were on the topic of overhead consoles, whats everyone do when they quit working? Find one working from a van or xj? Any aftermarket support? I currently have 1 that hardly works and another that has all sorts of broken diodes on it. Idk how so many diodes can snap completely in two... Odd...

Mine works fine. Temp is usually off by about 5 degrees, but the compass, map lights, and courtesy lights all work fine. I keep my sunglasses in the center console between the seats, but I have my garage door opener mounted in it.

The IR keyless entry was only good from inside 6ft, so I installed a RF receiver from a later Chrysler and use the newer key fobs to lock/unlock it.

There used to be some temp/compass "modules" available, but those dried up about a year or so ago. No other support I'm aware of.
