Shaving the drip rails?

Sooooo I bought a new to me 88 wag. 79k org miles blah blah blah. Body is in really shape in the areas that normally rust out but its rusted out in some strange places to me.

The drip rails on both sides of the wag are rusted out. PO tried all types of sealants and various other things to save it but mother nature and time won the battle.

The best option to me looks like to shave the drip rails off and just smooth out the gap and repaint. Anyone done it?
