(sigh) knocking from engine...

For some reason my engine is now knocking, not ticking like the last one, but knocking. I don't understand it since I got this engine with (claimed) 67,000 miles, and I barely put 4 on it. I just changed the oil, oil pan gasket, and rear main seal. The oil I am using is 10W40 (was using Motorcraft 5W20 synthetic).

I just hope I have to overhaul it, and not find myself replacing another engine.

Or AMC killer is my name

Can you isolate the point where the noise is coming from?
Back in the late 70's they had problems with the 232/258 developing a knocking noise. It came from the cam moving and allowing the timing chain to bounce around front to rear.
The guy at the local garage took a motor apart and couldn't find any bearing problems. The AMC dealer pointed him in the direction of the camshaft.
Evidently cam bearing wear.
There should be a service bulletin out on it, but who in the world would have that.
You may have a different problem.

Mine 258, in my Eagle, starting knocking Sunday. I turned back home but didn't make it. It turns out it wasn't my engine but my torque converter. The snout ripped right of the converter.

Dearest CJ,

Please treat me like a gentle lady. Ill take you to the ends of the earth. But realize I am a woman of age and need to be treated with dignity and respect.

AHHH hog wash!

CJ stop beating that girl of yours to death........

She is new to you so gently shake her down and make sure ALL items to keep up that engine are done.

I bought an Eagle wagon that a used car lot had sitting there.I had run across it a year earlier, when the previous owner had it.He had traded it in to the car lot.The guy at the car lot said it had a knock, motor was bad.He said he had his mechanic look at it,and the conclusion was it had a bad motor.I fired it up,and yes there was a knock, but if you put it in gear, stepped on the brake and lightly on the gas,the knock went away!I gave the guy $150,took it home, pulled the tranny and transfer case. The flexplate/flywheel was cracked completely loose from the crankshaft.I installed another flexplate, replaced the front pump seal,as long as I was in there. No more knock, drove the car for 3 more years, then sold it,still a good motor. It would be worth a check of the flexplate.

The last block had a stress crack in cylinder three where that piston failed.
So I guess I should try an Iron Duke 151?

That is what my engine is doing, so I'll check that out.

Did you tork all the main caps to the correct specs? I swear we need to start a program like the Ham radio folks have where an older experienced operator called an Elmer takes a new-by under his wings and teaches them the ropes. Corey this is no dis on you just some old guy ranting about how we don't teach our kids how to survive these days.

My mistake. I confused pounding with hammer.

Actually I did use a hammer, but with a screwdriver settled on the seal. Had to do it on my last engine, but it came out with one light tap.

This one stayed in one place tap after tap, blow after blow.
(plus I was told not to hammer on the crankshaft)

And if and when I overhaul/rebuild this engine, that upper seal will need to come out then.

80lbs. right?

Then yes.
Ever since I got my wag, I have been teaching myself (and learned through IFSJA) how to work on it and other vehicles. However I haven't done this long enough to hear all of the sounds (except that ticking)

Try backing off the ignition timing a little and see if that helps.

knock knock

does it get worse when you accelerate? ignition detonation sounds, are different than crank and rod noise, anything coming from the bottom end is usually accompanied by visual metal sparkels on the dip stick, a way to isolate noise, use a long socket extension, holding it up to your ear, touching various areas of the block, head, timing cover, trans bell, while running, tapping the throttle, to get the most extreme area of noise pin pointed, hope this helps.
