j10 under bed spare tire mount

This may be a stupid question but i'm trying to mount my spare tire under the bed
I have a 1984 J10. The previous owner had a long bar, which i believe was for the spare tire. There was a trailer hitch mounted underneath. Now that I've removed it, I would like to put the spare tire back.
I can't see how it mounts though. Anyone have an idea how it mounts?

On my 1979 j20 the bar mounts under the frame angled diagonally from the passenger side to the driver side. Drivers side hole is just before the cross member.Passenger side is in the rear corner.I have a trailer hitch and my spare tire still fits with no problems.

I can get you a picture later. As mentioned, the bar goes across the opening and there is a bolt with a plastic nut that it hooks on to at the right rear corner. The bolt head is lug-wrench sized, and snugs the bar across the tire.

To each his own but every under-bed tire mount I've had on any pickup, I removed. First time you have to drop the spare laying in the mud or snow/slush, you'll realize the joy of an "in-bed" spare tire mount.

I have always had mine in the bed, but hate how much room it takes in a step side. What I would really like is to attach a spare tire mini winch like thing, like they have in modern pickups and some cars.

          * 1982 Laredo j-10, 360, 727, in rough shape and in the process of being rebuilt with 401, NV4500, Klune,
. NP205,d60 front, d70 rear, fender work and minimal lift. It will probably take 10 years

I added a receiver hitch to my J20 and made the mods in this link:

I finally got around to mounting the spare under the bed of the J20 after mounting the receiver hitch. Had to move the rear mount and shorten the carrier and drill a new hole for the forward mount. Also had to cut a section off of each end to make it all fit and make a bracket for the rear mount. It' s mocked up now and I'll

                Hope it helps.

You can see I have a piece of coathanger wire around the bar so it does not bounce down with no spare in there. There is a big plastic nut in the frame rail above the wire that the bolt screws into. With the bar unhooked from the bolt and this end lowered, you lay the spare on the bar, then you lift the bar with your lug wrench, using the pointy end of the wrench and the socket in the bar. Then you tighten the bolt to hold the tire securely. Lowering the tire is the opposite routine.

As joe describes, it's a pain to get the tire in and out of there. Someone on here (?) showed a conversion to a crank and cable that winches up and down. Some trucks (not Jeep) come with these ... http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=55607

You can see the big plastic nut in one of the photos in my other post. It's the white piece on the mount I made. Agreed that it's not a user friendly, I use a floor jack to get mine in and out. It would be a royal pain to have to do this on the side of the road somewhere!
