Should I go for it? 360 to 5.7 swap.

A friend of mine has a 92 chevy Z71 he will give me for FREE. It has a rebuilt engine and trans but the truck is pretty much trashed. My 72 Waggy's 360/TH400 is getting tired @ 200,000 miles. Since the 5.7 TBI engine and 700R4 is free I'm wondering if the swap would be a wise descission vs the AMC rebuild. The only thing holding me back is that the waggy is a totally untouched original but is used frequently and the modern upgrade seems to make sense

personal choice

It would be hard for me to pass up a gold mine like that. I would probably go for the fuel injection and O/D myself.

You could always sell the 5.7 setup and put that money in your Jeep

Since it's FREE, why not? You get a good motor and OD as well! I'd do it, esp. since it sounds like you can pull everything yourself and make sure you get all the required wiring and stuff.

no sell the 5.7 and put fuel injection on the 360. But do what you want!

I'm not a big fan of putting a SBC in anything other than a Chevy but in this case I would be leaning towards the swap since the cost of it will more than likely be a lot cheaper than a rebuild of just the 360.

Free is most usually always a good deal.

The only real issue I see, is that the transfercase should be a drivers drop on the chevy. Nothing that can't be fixed with an adapter, or front axle swap.

I am liking the "sell the Chevy goods to rebuild the Jeep motor/tranny/tcase" idea. Once you go into a swap and all that is involved it will never be original again. That is my thinking.

It may be a great way to go for all I know.

A righteous up grade for a 72 Waggy would be 74-79 Waggy axles and disk front brakes.

It's your vehicle. anyone can work on a chevy. they are so cheap and plentiful that most just r&r. and don't build. I respect the person that can work on and keep Jeep

well if he is going to give it to you then you can't sell it because that's just not cool...I say tell him to keep it and you keep your OE OE. Remember full size Jeeps are cool and small block Chevy's are a dime a dozen...or in your case one free. Stick with the 360.

Personally, if I hadn't never had a 401,,my J20 would have a sbc in it right now.
I say swap it..just be prepared to do both axles as well,,that might be a deal breaker though.
One thing you could possibly do though. If you can find a Dodge np208 to go behind the 700r4, I believe they are passenger drop.. then you would not have to mess w/ your axles. That might make it doable.

If I was going to spend the time & money for a swap, I'd have to go with a Diesel engine.

I can get a 76 wagoneer, not free but cheap, and I've considered a later model axle swap but I would have to add the Q/T as well to match the offset rear differential on the newer set up. I'm not knocking the Quadra Trak but I like my D20. I was also thinking of just taking the free chevy and put it on the road as my DD so I can dry dock the waggy and fix er up.

Id swap it in a heartbeat, get that crapy 360 out of it. Im seriously considering doing it right now myself or selling it for half of what I have in it and going with a newer rig.

X2!
I could not have said it better.

Even better than you are getting the entire vehicle as a donor to get all the little "widgets" that otherwise would nickel and dime a project to death.

If my wag was a 1980s or 90s model I wouldn't give the swap a second thought. Since its a 1972 survivor I'm more apt to leaving it that way and redoing the factory setup. Not to many of the really old ones around anymore, even out here on the west coast. I'm really considering taking the free Chebby and just putting it on the road again. All the things it needs to get going can be had at Pick and Pull. Lots of dents though.
