clutch and transmission
Hey guys, What manual 4 speed do I have in my 87 J10? It is between a 258 and a 208. I don't think it is a T18 because there is no PTO port on the pass side. Was curious. Will have to climb under again sometime since I lost the numbers.
Also what clutch do you guys recommend. There is a chattering noise in the bellhousing area that changes only when the clutch is depressed or released. Figure if I am going to tear into to check the pressure fingers I should as well swap out the clutch disk.

T-176.
I'm not well enough experienced with clutches to reccommend one, I'd just say a standard clutch should be all you need, a heavy clutch will be miserable and rough, perhaps that's why it chatters now. How heavy is the clutch pedal?

My buddy had a chattering manual tranny in his Ranger (it was really bad in 2nd gear). It turned out it was just low on fluid. I've been told a chattering tranny is the sign of trouble and that it could last anywhere between 100 and 100,000 miles before it goes. You may wanna check the fluid before you tear into it.

Chattering can also be caused by a throwout bearing on its way out. If you need to replace it, the clutch and all should be replaced since it's apart. I've heard good things about Centerforce clutches.

Look down on the top by the shifter. should say something like 13-01 if a T18. Shouldn't be because the T18 was only a option for the J20. Prob a 176.
The is no PTO on the 80's T-18's at least on the one in my garage.

I plan on doing a 4.5 swap in the future. Will any 258 clutch work since the 4.5 stroker is using the 258 crank and thus flywheel. (IRC I read the bolt pattern is different.)

Get a complete stock replacement clutch kit (pressure plate, clutch disk, throw-out bearing, pilot bushings, alignment tools) unless you have a fairly modified (high HP or torque) motor. I purchased a Sachs from Car Quest and was 11"dia, pulled out old clutch and it was a 10.5" centerforce assembly, and the new clutch is alot easier to press the clutch pedal. But whatever clutch you do buy, do not grease the pilot on the trans just clean it with some emerycloth and do not grease the pilot bushing either, and just take the emerycloth to the flywheel as well to remove any glazing, unless you have serious hot spots then you'll need to have it resurfaced at a machine shop. Since you have to completely pull the trans to gain access to change any of those parts in the kit, drain the oil in the trans & t-case and pull the trans, and install the new kit and reinstall the trans & refill the gearboxes with new oil.
