Brake Booster Swap

The brakes on my 79 J10 have always been hard. They felt as if I had manual brakes. I decided it had to be a bad booster.
I went to order a reman booster and the single diaphram was out of stock. I ordered a dual diaphram booster and installed it today. The swap was straightforward, take out the old booster, swap over the firewall bracket, and install the new booster.
All I can say is wow! The first time I hit the brakes I about kissed the steering wheel!

I got it at autozone. It was around $80 with core exchange.

Rockauto has them on clearance . I also went with a late model power booster. Shortly afterwards, I noticed a rattle. The hole on the rod was larger than my old brake booster and it was rattling . Switched out to a late model brake pedal.

If you can't make it better why waste your time. No use repeating the orignal mistakes. I'm to old to push it that's why.

I did the same swap a couple years ago. It was a major improvement. I would suggest the swap to a duel diagram even if your booster is working.

I had the same problem on my '79 except the dual diaphrams were no where to be found, even through RockAuto. I sourced one from a late model GW and it swapped right over. Only had to adjust the brake light switch. Same thing, I about ate steering wheel my first time hitting the brakes LOL!

The booster A1 Cardone # 54-71014. This is for vehicles with the cast iron master cylinder. I don't know about interchangability with the newer aluminum master cylinders.

You will never believe how difficult it is to remove those bolts holding it down. They are really torqued. The angle is bad too. If you can get a articulating ratchet, your life will be much easier.

I am having issues with my booster. I believe it is due to the vacuum my motor is producing. Do you think a dual would help with my braking even with the lower vacuum? Any improvement would be helpful.

Go with hydroboost. Then who cares how much vacuum you engine makes, at least in terms of the brakes. I have hydroboost on my Cherokee, my brother put it on his Grand Wagoneer, and I will be installing it on my CJ5. A bracket is not hard to make, or you can get one from Elliot.
