    cherokee's and 35's

how y'all doing, first off i've had 6 differint jeeps in my 40 plus years, cj's and 2 xj's.but i'm a newbie to the big jeeps. now thinking about a 79 cherokee ive found, with the steel fender flares im pretty sure its a wide track, so my question is how much lift do i have to have to run 35's on 10 in. wheels? all springs? springs plus body lift? im open to all options everyone has done.. i'm not above some sheet metal trimming.but i dont want to have to completely remove the flares either.i dont rock crawl so needing to stuff the tires completly into the fenders is not needed.we do mostly muddy trails & hillclimbs. any advice......AND PICS OF YOUR RIDES with 35's would be greatly appreciated.. thanks.

I run 35's on my WT on stock rims with Rough Country 3" lift springs and no rubbing except at full articulation with the swaybar disconnected. Not sure what difference 10" rims would make.

You gonna wheel it? If not, you dont need much lift at all. If you are going to wheel it, you will probably need 4"s plus trimming. If you are going to wheel it hard, you will need closer to 6"s total plus trimming.

A body lift on top of the 4" would work instead of a 6" spring. Since 6" springs are sooo stiff, they will reduce your flex enough to keep the tires out of the sheet metal, but YOUR body will pay the price. Personally, I dont like how stiff the 6" springs available are, and I wouldnt recomend using them.

Here is a 79 that I had before. It was SOA/Shackle Flip (about 6-7"s) and 35"s. If I remember correctly, the rims were 16.5x10" and the tires were 35x14.5" SSR's.

dmntxn, this might be a dumb question, I'm very new to the FSJ. Is that cherokee a wide track? Are all four door cherokees (late 70s models) narrow tracks?

Yes, mine was a wide track. Not all two door Cherokees are wide tracks, but ALL 4 door FSJ's are narrow track. There was never a 4 door wide track option.

The flares around the fenders are the give-a-way...

Mine had a 4" lift on it when I got it. 35's on 10" and 8" wide wheels would catch the lower edge of the flares when wheeling. I ditched the 4" and went SOA with flat Wagoneer springs. Ended up with a much better ride, and no issues with the tires anymore.

with 8" wide wheels you will really only need 4" of lift. if you really gotta go with 10" wide wheels you will need 6" of lift.

i have stock 8" wide wheels and will clear 36x12.50's pretty well with only 4" of lift.

i hadnt really considered 8's untill now, the main reason i wanting to clear 10's is the cherokee will be a recreational driver most of the year and i was wanting to fit the 35's & 10's so when winter came i could swap them with the 35" trxus mt's that are on 10's i have on my completly topless (not even a windshield) cj for winter playing &have those nice upgraded options like roof,doors,windows,and...HEAT....thanks everyone,i guess i have a little more studying to do

I have 35x13.50-15 on the stock 8 inch wide wheels. I have a 4 inch lift from BJ's. Only very minor rubbing during hard wheeling. (when it was running)

Mine is Narrow track 2 door. Spring over axle with the shackle flipped out back. 35 x 12.50 on 8's. I'd favor a spring over for muddy trails, getting the springs out from under the axle in front can help you out a lot if the trail is rutted and your looking at a nasty high center of the trail or random rocks.

More lift will give you some breathing room on the 35's and preserve your body/ tires should the two meet with some wheel spinnage involved. More lift is also more steering correction but some get by with just a drop pitman arm, it depends on your comfort zone in driving old jeeps with lifts and big tires.

A spring over is more fabrication than bolt on per say and there's plenty of documented modifications that are needed. I'd do a spring over versus a body lift/ lift springs because to me the later is tons more work/headaches but others would probably disagree. TT's fabworks has a kit that pretty much makes it as easy as humanly possible.

The pic shows how clean the approach of the front axle is after getting the springs on top. A pretty key fact if the rig is an recreational only driver. They wheel very well dead stock, meats and lift makes 'em down right mean and very impressive.

Took 6" and some minor trimming to fit 35's under my NT fenders & WT axles. Thats on 8" wheels

With WT fenders you should be able to easily fit 35's on 10" wheels with a 4" lift kit.
