color of wagoneers underneath

the 2 wagoneers i have are white
and i noticed like most vehicles
the metal of floorpans etc under vehicle are body color

recently i have seen 2 green wagoneers for sale
and the pictures from the underside on both, show white floorpan areas
( the bottom of the bed area where spare tire is mounted is also white )

does this mean the color has been changed
or did jeep paint all wagoneers white underneath ?

any response appreciated.

a ha,.....thanx for the verification.

both of the wagoneers i speak of are on ebay.

one may claim to have been green from the factory

or they just did not mention the color change, ( cant remember )

one was on the high side price wise.

i assume most folks that want a green wagoneer want it to be originally green from factory.

i was just curious, and you guys confirmed my doubts.

The frame was/is black.

All three of my Cherokees are a very light grey underneath. I believe MattMopar440's Dark Cherry '91 GW and Champaign '87 GW are also very light grey underneath.

Maybe it’s a friday end if day rig that isn’t body color?
Some if these have horrid QC and panel fit.
My ‘89 had like half inch if shims on all doors which were not even needed after adjusting them correctly. Hood had unneeded shims too.

Dave,
Under my carpet is a well-painted body color. However, under the spare tire is more of a gray color.

thanks for the info.

i am finding that some got paint underneath

and some got primer only.

and i am sure at some point, maybe early on,....

FSJ's were painted by workers

and prob later in FSJ production it may have went to robots

for some or all of the paint, so methods and amount of coverage

could have changed over the years.

Light gray is the electrocoat of the bare panels. I recall my '75 new was gray underneath - they did not paint the underside beyond the electrocoat dip (spray?) that the raw body got. When I wrecked it and the body shop repainted it, they sprayed the underside too.

The fit and assembly of the body panels on my 1972 are pretty good. The gaps are average for the time and there are not many shims. However, the paint is crap. They did not prime the metal at all. Just one or two coats of color (single stage enamel) and done. You can see what look like bad sanding marks under it in places but that is FACTORY. It has its original paint. I don't know if it is lead or plastic filler or what, but it was done at the Jeep factory in April, 1972. Some areas inside the doors were not painted at all, and rust of course went to town there.

I guess you can say it held up ok because still has its original paint and still looks darn good for 46 years old.

But yeah. Body, rust proofing, and paint quality was not stellar on these. The engine, drivetrain, chassis, and interior are well made, but the body is not.

For what still had paint on it... Mine's body color underneath.
Now there's a lot of black where I installed the new sheet metal.

Interesting. As best I can tell my '85 GW is black underneath. black inside the tailgate. Floor (inside) body color - poly brown. Underhood and engine bay - body color.

I pulled some of the under coating from the trans tunnel and it is white in color. Most of the under side was pewter gray metallic just like the jeep.
