Trail rig issues - won't stay running

OK, lets see what you guys can come up with for my dilemna. I haev an 83 J10 trail only rig. Stock 6 cylinder with HEI and Weber carb. Fuel cell, no bed, etc. I had it out on the trail yesterday and it ran like POOP! Backfiring, dying and not restarting, etc. It seems like it is starving for fuel, but the backfiring would indicate too much fuel. When I gace it gas, it would bog, then it would suddenly backfire and take off. I did notice that the choke plates on the carb were always mostly or partially closed and the engine was running very warm, not overheating, but very close. Can't give you an exact temp since my temp gauge does not work. It runs good when it is cold. Any thoughts?

    Water in the gas?

I recently had similar issues with my CJ-7 trail rig that I don't drive too often. I think condensation in the tank built up. I put a bottle of Heet water remover in it and it worked perfect the next day.

Worth a shot before you start taking stuff apart. I assumed it was my Pro-Jection TBI malfunctioning at first.

Need to adjust your choke first.

When I've run Webers on 258's I found running a fuel pressure regulator helps. The ones from NAPA are identical to the ones Cagel used to make.

I run a 32/36 on my J10 and the only time I have gotten that symptom is when the engine is cold and I try to take off before it is warm. But once warm, it runs great.

Do you have a vacuum gage? If so what are you reading at idle with the engine warm? Also, did you tune the carb the way Weber says? The carb can be very picky if its not adjusted the exact way they say too.

With the elec. choke, I need a keyed 12 volts to the choke correct? I do not seem to have any juice going to the choke at all. Where would be a easy place to get a keyed 12 volts? It ran great last fall, the last time I had it out before a broke a poop-load of stuff.

I wired mine directly to the selenoid terminal that has power whenever the key is in the on/run position.
