    1986 (I think) Grand Wagoneer

Hey, yall. I just bought a Grand wagoneer this past weekend, I was told its an 86 model, but I am not 100% sure. He is still looking for the title (I know, but he is a good friend so I trust he does have it). Its rough, but all there and I got it for $275. He was going to scrap it, but I couldnt let the old thing go. Im hoping to get it fixed up and make it a cruiser/tow pig for my ZJ.

My tip for getting an AMC running after sitting a long time:
        Rockauto.com
Carb rebuild (or replace), plugs, cap, rotor, wires, fuel filter, oil change (twice), trans filter change, buy a lifetime supply of vacuum hoses, thermostat, coolant, upper/lower radiator hoses, heater hoses, and a battery. This is about 4 hours of work to put all this stuff in (except the vacuum lines, they are our arch nemesis).

Expect oil leaks at the pan, rear main, and valve covers so you might want to order those seals, too. (this is another 4-6 hours of work)

Once it's running and moving around your lot, go get Dif cover seals and front wheel seals and do the axle oil and re-pack your bearings, flush your break fluid, and fix the things that bug you. (one more 4-6 hour work session)

We all love pictures so keep 'em coming! Use the search function on here and you will find about 95% of what you need to know. The classifieds are great too. I am sure you will find a grill, radiator support, etc. and all the little things you will need.

These Jeeps are tons of fun to work on and drive! Welcome to the club!

Nice rescue. That's an '86 by the way. May have been built in '85 for the '86 model year.

Thanks. I did some research and thought it looked like an 86 but the tag in the door says 85. As soon as I get it cleaned up enough to see the VIN tag ill send it to jeep and get a build sheet.

It looks like an '86...woodgrain trim/dash etc. tell the tale.
                  '85 dash would be different
The build sheet from Jeep will be woefully inaccurate.
Year is VIN is 10th digit '86=G
                  Welcome and good luck/have fun, can't lose @ $150

The buid date tag on the door jamb does not state model year. Model year change over on the assembly line is July so's the manufacturer can stock the dealer lots by Aug-Sep when the new models are generally avail. If it was built in Jul or later 85 it was built as an 86 model year.

Pulled it out and washed off the pine needles and some grime, but hit a problem. The sun roof leaks like crazy.... Is this common?

This is not FSJ-specific, but most sunroofs have drain tubes that attach to the corners and carry water away. Those tubes can get clogged with debris and/or shrink and harden over time to the point that they no longer stay attached to the frame of the sunroof. Either scenario will create a big leak.

Did you know? Willys is just Willis spelled differently, but pronounced the same. Neither Willy nor his apostrophe are involved.
