I would leave it! That thing is so cherry I would hate to mess with it. If you must paint it, though, I'd leave it the stock color
Ha! Funny, I am not wild about this color either. But have to admit, it has grown on me some? Hmm. Oh well, money does not permit a repaint right now, so I can think on the color for "someday".
Haven't worked on the SJ lately, been working and doing some other hobby stuff. I did take her for a drive today. sat for 3 weeks without running, fired right up and drove away! Woot!
Weather is cooling here in Michigan. uh oh . . you know what that means? it has to go in the garage soon. Dang it.
Hey Jim. I got the upper door trim but only got 2 long and 2 short ones. I didn't see your post about 3 long ones on each side till after I bought them. Oh well. I'll find 2 more shortly. Love the work you are doing on yours. Wish I had the time to work on mine that much.
I did find a potentially BIG problem. Seems the 401 has developed a sudden and serious valve train tick. LOUD in my book. It comes and goes, but I am going to have to dig into this. uh oh! Still runs great, just is making some loud ticking noise??
Any ideas where to start?
Engine work is easy.. but expensive. Hoping this may be a collapsed lifter or something.. plan to pull the rocker cover off and look around. Need new gaskets anyway.. lol
Let me say this: Hmmmm, not sure what that noise was. The photo shoot went well, and they told me no strange noises? When I picked it up, only the usual engine sounds. What the heck??
Consulting with some old school AMC guys, they think a lifter was stuck. So - as the oil was a bit down anyway, added a quart of ATF and drove it a bit. This helps remove varnish build up and acts like an engine flush of sorts. Would limit miles to about 50 or so.. get it good and warm once or twice.
Now engine is much quieter.. only a small tick from what I now think is an exhaust leak from below. Planning a new exhaust system soon anyway. Now, time to change the oil and filter.
I am also going to verify oil pressure as my gauge seems to wander up and down some. Just want to see what is really going on here!
Cooling off in MI.. gonna have to clean out a space in the garage. Yuk, I hate Jeep hibernation season.
Headlights.. hmm, seem to be turning on and off by themselves? thought it might be the dimmer switch as I had somewhat inconsistent high beams.. sometimes yes, sometimes no. So put a new dimmer switch in.. and...
Still turning headlights on and off? Takes about 10 minutes, then they seem to cycle on and off... someone mentioned a breaker in the headlight switch? Is that a possible cause? have a new switch on order.
Have some new Cibe lights and bulbs to install, but need to figure this out first..
Mine was doing the same thing for about a month. Then, one night they quit all together. I pulled the switch and found that the terminal was partially melted Was able to repair it and replaced the switch. Problem solved!
Also bought a relay setup from Serehill to take the load off the old and aging system. Be careful... You do t want a fire in that Expletive Deleted!Expletive Deleted!Expletive Deleted!Expletive Deleted!Expletive Deleted!en rig of yours!!

Thanks for the info .. I have a new switch ready. BUT - Moms 85th birthday this weekend has postponed Jeep project work. Soon to be changed. Mom had a great time on her B-Day!!
And, the new lights get a full relay setup anyway.... they work better with direct voltage anyway. However, I want this situation fixed no matter what! Will update if I find any damage when the old part comes out.
youre doin it right. one little job at a time
is all u need with something that looks that good
to start with.
PLUS going this route you get to drive it when you want.
that to me makes it the most fun.
keep up the great work and keep it out of the salt!
I always am bugging my Jeep buddies - DO NOT buy a running vehicle, then tear it apart. As you guys know.. the ambition often exceeds the motivation, budget, and family demands. Then it sits . . . ugh
I always encourage them to drive it for some time, enjoy it, and keep a log book of what needs fixin'. Then start chipping away at it. Sure - sooner or later a big project will shut it down for a bit, but I got to enjoy it some before this happens.
