Mounting a winch, feet forward or down?

So I have my winch working now, and I am working on ideas of how to mount it. Are they supposed to be mounted with the feet forward or down? Or does it matter? If it doesnt matter, then witch way is the better or stronger choice of mounting it?

From the looks of it, it looks like this one is ment to mount with the feet forward. I notice that it only has 3 of the "tie rods", there are holes for a 4th one, but its not there, it looks to me like it would be in the way of the cable if it was there. also with the feet forward, the gear lever is up top, (and the sticker lines up to read it..lol) I have a mounting plate a friend gave me, you can see it in the pic (but he said he thinks its made for a chevy, there is noting about it that lines up with anything on the jeep) I know its a warn mount because it has the "W" logo stamped in it. On it, the holes to mount the winch are forward and the hole for the cable is at the bottom, fitting perfectly with the missing tie rod. The mounting plate was given to me by a friend (not the guy I got the winch from) so the plate did not come with the winch, but it is brand new. If I was to try and mount it feet down I would have to move the tie rod, and they are not comeing loose, the bolts will probably ring off before they come out. The guy I got the winch from used it to pull cars onto a car trailer, and it was already removed and the trailer was gone, so I dont know how he had it mounted. But the studs on the motor and where the solenoid box was mounted, led me to belive he had it mounted feet down. But it doesnt really matter, I can remove a few allen head screws and rotate to motor how ever I want it. (right now the studs face the rear)
But that leads me to my next question.

I got a whole new solenoid box. The old one was a little rusty and coroded on the inside (probably from weather) and a little beat up and didnt work. I would like to keep this one out of the weather and mud/dirt because they are not weather tight. So I was thinking, is there ANY reason I couldnt (or shouldnt) mount the box somewhere under the hood? There are 3 cables that run from the box to the motor all I would need to do is get some new longer ones made, and I could mount it anywhere I want. I was thinking about mounting it on the inner fender between the brake mc and the washer and coolant bottles. I mean, its a good idea to have the hood open when winching anyways, so incase the cable breaks, its less likely to come through the windshield. So I dont really see a reason I couldnt mount it there.

And one last question. The cable at the verry end is kinked a little and has a few slivers sticking out, so I need to trim the cable back a couple feet. When I do, what the best was to make a loop? I was thinking about just looping it through the hook, then useing like 2 or 3 of those "U" cable clamps? Is that good enough? Or is there another way it should be done?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Well, if it's like the 8274 it mounts forward into the upright section of the winch bumper/plate and the roller fairlead bolts on to the outside of the plate through the mount holes... from the diagrams I have (which looks consistent with what the plate looks like in your pic).

This is bracket assembly that the winch plate fits to (let me know if you decide to part with that plate):

your correct the mount foot goes forward on the m12000. most of the large winches (at least warn ones) mount this way.

      http://www.warn.com/truck/winches/src/images/47/39404D0.pdf

page 5 of the manual for the m12000 illustrates this.

as for shortening the cable, it can be done that way but i would recommend for your safety and others that you just take it to a rigging shop and have it done right. or get a new line.
If it aint broke, fix it 'till it is.

You should also replace that missing bar. The previous owner probably removed it so the cable could swing in a wider arc when loading things on the trailer which would be fine but when you're stuck and winching thats a lot more stress on the spool and plates. The trailer guy probably didn't have a roller or hawse fairlead on his. Dennis

I kinda figured there was more to it other than the plate. I'm not sure if I want to part with it. I was thinking about useing it as a pattern to build a bumper off of, or just finding a way to intergrate it into a home made bumper.

I was thinking about some synthetic line, but is there any rated for the M12000? Most I see are for 8-9000lb winches. I dont want it to break on my first run.

Yea I will probably get a new one, might have to just get all new ones. The 3 thats on there now are loose (you can spin them a little by hand) I tried to tighten them down but they wont, I tired to loosen them, but they wont do that either. The bolts will probably break off first. I have the part number for them from warns website, so now all I need to do is find a dealer to see how mutch they are, and order them. I dont know how he had it mounted, but it did come with a roller fairlead and it looks well used, so I am guessing he probably had it on there, but who knows.

Thanks DB, I was wondering if they had something thick and long enough to spool up on my wide drum 12,000 Ramsey pto that would be thick enough to run through a pulley... can you run winch rope through a pulley?

              Edit, ok...

Can I use my snatch block with rope?
Yes, as long as it is not burred-up from steel cable.

This could save me a lot of weight swapping to rope and using hawse fairlead vs my 75Lb roller fairlead, but the cost of 225' of 1/2" would be killer.

I wont be needing mine. I'm going with something alot stronger than the Warn Classic bumper, not to mention those frame to mount brackets are screwed. They're bent pretty badly. Pushed the winch into the "new" grille.

Feet forward, then you elminate the shear factor on the 4 mount bolts.

I used the mount plate from a 93 Bronco grill guard system from Warn, then fabbed up 5/16" mount to frame brackets (inside of mount-outside of frame), perfect fit. Then made up the outer ends from .120 flat stock, inserting fog lights in the face. Lost quite a bit on the approach angle, but it suits me dandy for the use I give the rig. Cut down a factory grill guard and attached on top.

Ok, heres something I just found out. Oldyellowwag said that I should replace the missing tie rod. Well I got on warns website and found the pdf exploded view with parts list. On it, it shows the parts, then on the list it shows the part number and how many you need. I found the tire rod and it only lists that you use 3. ?? So I am guessing that it is correct in haveing only 3 of the rods? But I will be ordering at least 2 new ones anyways, on two of them, the bolts rung off just as I thought they would. I pulled all the cable off and it if full of kinks and splinters almost all the way through it. So its getting replaced with the rope. I had to remove the tie rods so I could get the drum off it. The bolt holding the cable on was rusted tight. Finally got it off and I am gonna sand down the rust and spray it with something, unless it would hurt the rope? I figure rough rusted metal would do more damage than paint.

feet forward (4 bolts and then the two on the bottom).....my cliffhanger bumper's winch plate was to short so I had it cut out and a larger one welded in.....this is what it looked like when I tried to mount the winch the first time....

then after the new plate....mounted up.

No, that happened when I didn't get out of the vertical mud hole and had to back back in it. The entire weight of the Jeep landed on the mount and bent the ever lovin' wee out of the frame brackets. I will not use this mount on my rig. I'm building a bumper and new mount and going with my XD9000 on the Chief. I love the 8274 and all but the XD is a bit more compact. It will tuck closer to the grille and I can also get it a bit higher to keep it out of steep aproaches.
