    Closed knuckle axle

Im buying a 72 J10 for the cab and it comes with a set of axles. The rear is a 44 and the front looks like a 44 I hear it could also be a 27?? from looking at some 27 pics it does not look like a 27 diff cover, only one plug.

So my next question is would it be a closed knuckle 44? I no you can just look at it but Ive been by to look at it several times and always for get to check. It looks closed in one pic I have but its a really bad pic.

So my main question is if it is a closed knuckle 44 are they any good? I have a friend that wants to buy them as a set for his project, but I dont want to sell him a crappy axle just because it a 44

Nothing wrong with the closed-knuckle front end.
The only drawbacks are the turning radius and the grease seals.

It'll be a 44 if it's from a truck. The Wagoneer used a closed-knuckle Dana 30 in 1972, and the 27 in earlier models. Yep, they are fine. They can even be converted to disk brakes. Lots of info on the net about them - try Dr. Vern's site for some good discussion. http://www.vernco.com/frontaxle/ He shows the 25 or 27, but all the closed-knuckle axles are basically the same in components and operation.

They do have smaller (260X) u joints (same as D30's), 10 spline outers, 19 spline inners and course spline pinions. Decent axles though.

soooo if I had a match set with decent gears but the outside was rusty.. what would be a reasonable price for each or the set?? all the brake hardware is there but Im surr its needs to be rebuilt. For some reason I sell theing way to cheap.. sold a set of dana 60s or 70s (I cant rember) for 300 complete!

Free to $150 for the set. They aren't worth much. I couldn't sell a 4.27 geared D44 closed knuckle front with new brakes for $50. Tried for like a year, still have it sitting in my yard slowly picking parts off of it.

The rear is worth a $100 or so, it's a flanges shaft (should be) D44 with 30 spline shafts.
