Timing could be off, too advanced maybe. I had that problem and a timing gun helped work that out.

Did it always run like crap or is this new?

Timing: get a vacuum guage, even a cheap one, from the local autoparts store. Hook it up to manifold vacuum (it will register something above zero when in park and running). Set the parking brake. Chock the wheels. Put it in Drive.

Advance the timing until you reach the HIGHEST vacuum at idle. This is a great starting point.

THis may have messed up your idle speed but don'tworryaboutit. Take it out for a drive. STOMP on it in 2nd gear at about 45 mph and see ifyou get a PING. If you don't, advance the timing till you do. If you do, back it off till you don't.

Okay, now you have a good spot for your timing. With the guage still attached set the idle speed close to where you want it. Then set the idle mixture to best (highest) reading. Then set the idle speed.

Once you are there, small adjustements are all you need.

How long's it been since the last tune up, points, plugs, cap, rotor, plug wires etc?
