I just received Rusty's 4" add a leaf kit for my 1974 J-10 and I have a few questions.

First, were they supposed to send me a full set of U bolts? I received four matching ones that I think fit the front, then another three that are long and skinny, then two that are in between the other two sets. The description on their website includes u-bolts so I thought I was supposed to get them.

Second, the spring eyes on the front are 44.5" eye to eye. I measured the ones on the truck and they are 48" eye to eye. But they are pretty sacked out and the front shackle is pushed all the way forward. Do you think these will fit?

Finally, Rusty's instructions are cryptic at best. Where does the add-a-leaf go? In between the the two old rear leafs? On the bottom? It says they should go longest to shortest but I cannot tell if it is longer or shorter with the arc.

Also, how do the lift blocks fit into this? Their instructions do not even address that.

Thanks

i have a rustys 6" lift on my 83 j10 and the directions were aweful. it took two days and getting some great info on here and 2 calls to them to figure them out. yes you are supposed to get u bolts and nuts for them... the lift blocks on mine went skinny side front at least on the 6".

Your ubolts for the front should be about like this.
Tube side = 3" wide
Diff Side = 3 5/8" wide
It just happens that there is an different FSJ diff side setup (should not be in '74) so they may have tossed in an extra 3" wide one to be safe.
The rear would be four matching ones, probably the longest, since they have to add the block and AAL into the math. They should be about 3" wide also.

Unlike most things Ubolts are measured from the inside, not center to ceter, they should have all come with nuts and hardened washers.

Here are the torque #'s since I doubt they gave you that also.

Tad:

I think you are right about the set up.

However I received no washers and no shock boots.

Does anyone know how to put the blocks in? Seems lame Rusty's couldn't find the time to write instructions.

I'm not saying that's wrong but it does seem sort of cheep.

Here's the address and phone for a Dayton Distrbutor in San Diego:
SAN DIEGO FRICTON PRODUCTS
455 16TH STREET
SAN DIEGO, CA 92101
(619) 232-9164

See if they can not get you some new U-bolt washers, if not, try a spring shop.
Do not use lock washers, U-bolt washers are different.

Shock boots are available at most all quicky part places.

The blocks go at the very bottom between the axle perch and the lowest spring. Should be a pin on the bottom of the block that fits the hole on the spring perch, then a hole on the top of the block that the pin on the bottom of the spring pack drops into.

You might get on the BJ's Off-Road Forum, they carry some of Rusty's products and may be able to help, even if you didnt buy it from them.

Do you know which direction the blocks go? Thin side front or rear?

the skinny parts of the blocks go to the front. if there is a smaller end for a 4". rustys doesnt come with boots. and the directions are something to be desired.

Boots can be problematic as well. They keep HWY debree from scratching the rod yes, but go into mud, and they are great at keeping mud IN the boot, causing far more wear on the shock.

</font>[/quote]Just an FYI, both my '88 and '86 parts wag did not come from the factory with u-bolt washers. It was nut to plate. Can't vouch for other years.

I have never seen u-bolt washers on any spring lift that I have put on for any vehicle. I am thinking a PO put those on.
