    OK, Cherokee Emblem...it goes WHERE??

Alright, here's one for ya...how in the world did AMC decide where the Cherokee round emblem went on the cheros? I see them down behind the driver's front fender and up behind the driver's side back window...is there a method to when it went one place or the other? My pal has a 77 with the emblem up by the rear window, my 80 has it in the same place, but I just saw a 79 with it down by the fender?

Is this just another example of consistency with the AMC design team?

Thats my plan... I have about a dozen of them now.. Maybe I will put them ALL on

Here is link... BUT, like all posts made in an attempt to figure out WHAT AMC was thinking and WHEN they were thinking it.. A whole can of worms got opened...

My 79 Cherokee Chief had the large round Chief emblems on the back of the front fenders. All the rest of the Chiefs that I see have the emblems behind the rear glass. I know that mine has been repainted, so I have always assumed that they were moved after the paint.. Then, I noticed this other 79 that someone posted from a

Well it seems just like with everything else Jeepish there aren't any hard and fast rules...my 80 has the emblem behind the rear window, which according to Robert's string Jeep didn't do for that year...

But like was said previously...put it wherever you want to, right!!

Here is a pic of the 80 brochure and the Indian head emblem is on the fender in the top pic and behind the window in the Golden Eagle pic:

I looked at some other ads and brochures on that web site and it looks like 75-78 are behind the rear window. I couldn't get a good look at the 79 brochure page.

As a note, if you put them on the fender and have the 90-degree hinges, your doors will chew them up. If you do have those hinges, make sure to put them a little forward of the door

that is where mine are placed, and they just barely contact the emblem in its stock location, not enough to damage them.

although last night while installing the front fender, i was using my hand to smack the fender in for adjustment. the emblem fell off. woops.

here is my theory on placement. cheif badges were on the fenders, IF the paint was solid or had a mid stripe, not the bottom stripe of some. if it had the bottom stripe or was an 'S' or golden eagle, they were behind the rear window.

Unless the emblems have been gone for a long time, or someone did a nice job of removing them, I don't think my 79 GE cherokee ever had them behind the rear window or on the fender. It has original paint with 28 years of original dirt but no glue, sticker remnants or pry marks. BUT, I did just score a set off ebay!

yeah we've been here before and think of this as a rough guide, not be all, end all amc did a lot of strange stuff like put a giant golden eagle on a hot air baloon. in 1974 the rectangular "s" medallion was placed behind rear window. 1975-78 circle indian head "s" medallion was placed behind rear window. 1979-1983 on every package except laredo, golden hawk, and golden eagle, the "s" medallion was placed on the fender. if it had the chief package the medallion was placed inside the black stripe. but on a side note, i have only seen one picture of a 83 cherokee chief that had the medallion in the stripe.

My 79 GE didn't have them either, but I did add them myself later. I centered them behind the side glass, basically because I thought they looked better there.

I tend to think it depended on who was doing the placement that day. Otherwise there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of rhyme or reason to it.

Well mine is an 80 based on the VIN and the S package based on the original window sticker, and the emblem is behind the rear window...so I guess it's wherever they wanted to put it...
