    header install

what do you use to seal the headers on. Is there a specific torque they have to be? Any thing that would make this more difficult than i expect? Could someone please give me some information on installing aftermarket headers.

I used 12 pt ARP header bolts and lock washers, copper header gaskets. Also apply anti-seize to the bolt threads. I tightened them down when I put them on and then retightened them 2 weeks later. Since then no leaks...been over a year.

I was on a website called "headers by ed" who claimed the reason most aftermarket headers leaked was because of the small raised bead around the port on the header flange. His claim was that as you tighten the header bolts you pull one side away while pushing the other in and the resulting unevenness in pressure against the gasket results in the leak. His fix is to grind this bead flat to the flange and install in the normal fashion. i will be trying this soon as I have had a fair amount of problems getting mine to stay sealed even after retightening and locking bolts/washers etc. Just my $.02 worth.

I used the remflex gaskets I ordered from BJ's offroad. They seam to be holding up pretty well so far. This was one of the first problems that has stayed solved so far. They are very thick though. Cost about $50.00 with shipping but beats doing it over and over every 3 months. So far so good.

Stage 8 locking fasteners. Do a search. I use them with Edelbrock headers and highly recommend.
