Seymour AMC Blue on raw Aluminum, do you prime?

Picked up a used Edelbrock intake and am going to sand blast it today. I plan to paint it AMC blue using Seymour's EN-66 Hi-Tech Engine Spray Paint. I ordered the spray can from Amazon today (it gets here Sunday) but can't find the manufacturers instructions online for the paint.

Does this paint require a primer over raw aluminum? If so, what are your recommendations?

Good question. most people will say a good DP primer or self etching primer should be used under the top coat. I haven't seen the need.

I have found DP primers stick great but they make the paint so thick it chips easy and looks crumby. if you touch a bolt with a wrench or bump it a big chunk flakes off.

For what it's worth the factory didn't prime steel or aluminum on engines. I don't anymore either I just clean it real good with 203 and shoot it. the engine in my '70 Challenger was painted this way 15 years ago and still looks great.

I would look up Semours web page. They should have a contact phone email and street addy. Call their tech dept. Intakes are pain to R&R so I'd want get it right the first time. In the marine workboat industry for alum bits above the waterline or in the eng room we always used a zinc chromate primer for an enamel top coat.

I've been told that anything aluminum requires primer OR annodization before paint will hold worth a darn. I don't remember who / what exactly but I think I heard it from one of my industrial robotics teachers

I think the sand blasting will give enough tooth for the paint to stick

Can showed up today and makes no mention of primer. It says
"Surface must be clean, dry, and free of rust before painting."
I sprayed my manifold and it looks GREAT! I'll try to get a pic later but am stoked on the finish, stoked on the color, and excited to get it on.... in like 6 months.

Ok, here it is. I don't have a before picture becuase i didnt have high hopes for a good finish. I have not chase my threads anywhere yet. Everything is finger tight or less. You can clearly see I gound off the "Edelbrock Performer" logo.

That poster has been hung in three garages in the lat 20+ years and was in one of my radar rooms on my last deployment. Anyone that has ever worn a dixie cup should have one hanging in their garage. 'Murica. Hell yeah.
