First off, I do want to say thanks to everybody who posted a build-up thread or posted any helpful hints on any subject, it really does take the bite out of tackling any project I have attempted.
I posted a pic when I first joined of my 87 Waggy.see below.
Since I bought it I have Rebuilt the carb, completely gutted and replaced everything in the power steering system. And last weekend I did the despised rear main seal. (will not be doing that anytime soon)
Ok, the headliner..
The old headliner/backerboard came out very easy and like instructed by many of you I used a wire wheel and then a drywall hand sander with 150 grit to get off the hard to remove Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley.
I used the headliner fabric from Joanne's. It is fairly cheap material, not designed for heavy abuse or at least thats my opinion. I used Loc-tite 300 adhesive, 3 cotes, first and second cotes were in the same direction over lapping, and third was diagonal to the first 2.
When I laid the fabric down on the cardboard, I laid it gently then used deliberate but light strokes back and forth without using my fingers or palm, as the heavy coatings of adhesive would more than likely grab the foam underside and leave bumpy headliner (which to some degree is still unavoidable do to the cheap material).
On the outer edges, I used a bit of force simply so when I tucked the headliner back into its channels it would not peel back. It all tucked in very nicely and where I had a but of trouble, I simply guided it in with a plastic spatula.
I also took the time and used the left over fabric to do the visors, I un-stitched the visors and simply used the same process as the headliner, except taco'ed the halves and re-stitched them..Not to much trouble at all considering I had just done the rear main seal only days before, so this felt like a breeze..
Really wish I had taken before and after pics, but oh well.
The cut-out
Turned out pretty good except for me having to tear off and start over on the front half due to trying to speed thru the job to hang with my new little guy. those dangling animals in the Jeep are not for my amusement. lol.
