The ones I currently own!?

I'm not done yet....

'Penny' $400 so far...but I'm just getting started on her.

'Two Dogs'...TOO MUCH!...and I still can't drive it.

The Jeep was traded for some CJ parts and has undergone some..er...major changes. Right now about $4000 in parts. When I'm done, probably $7500.

I have to admit, right now I would much rather have the money! Even when/if this is completed, I'm not going to be able to afford to drive it!

I never have added it up - let's see:

$1000 purchase price (included: TT's SOA/shackle flip & high steer knuckles installed, TFI & electric fuel pump installed, set of J-10 axles, spare radiator, gas tank, 1.5" billet wheel spacers)
$200 exhaust
$130 PORC/Rough Country shocks
$100 BJ's brake hoses
$500 35" Baja Claws
$250 three spare 360's, a TH400, and 2 BW-1339's
$20 Chevy K5 front driveshaft
$120 all new u-joints
$35 front axle (knuckle-out) bearings & seals
$30 brake pads & bleeder screws
$65 BJ's shackles
$26 Ford F250 front shock mounts
$25 York compressor
$15 OBA surge tank
$40 Hi lift jack (60")
$20 bottle jack (12 ton)
$400 (+ trade Baja Claws) 36" bias IROKs mounted on 15x10 steel rims
$230 Powermaster (140amp) alternator
$250 Odyssey 1100 amp battery
$300 front bumper
$300 XRC8 winch
$25 clevis mounts for bumper
$70 six 3/4" clevises
$35 snatch block (16,000lb)
(already had all other recovery gear)
$50 steering column
$125 power tailgate & both front doors
-$100 sold 2 engines

Total = $4,261

Not as bad as I thought, that's less than our TJ is worth, and the Chero is much more capable.

Red face

I am choosing not to read all the responses from you sick people. How can you even ask such a question. My rig cost me $3250. I could maybe sale it tomorrow for $5000, MAYBE. I have had to put it in the shop to have someone smarter than I take care of a few things, but other than that most of it has been my work or hack job or whatever it currently is. I did buy the new engine from Golen.
I try not to think about it, but over the 4 years I have had it (I count this year while I have been overseas to help bring down the annual costs..) I think I have somewhere close to $12000 in it.

Still have some things to get worked out and then it will be time for the body and interior remodel. I expect to drop another $7-10K of "deployment money" in it when I get home. Mainly because I am NOT a bodyman. I have had no success meeting my own expectations with it in my past attempts. Best left to someone else. The interior I will do as much as I can and have to rely on an upholstery shop for the rest.

I guess, if I self-justify, or make some useless attempt to, I will have bought my jeep over the 5-6 years it will have been once finished and I will probably have paid for it what a new car's payments would have been.

I don't like thinking about this. No more! Back to my happy place. Just sitting here on my cot cleaning my M-4...that's better. No more thoughts of cost associated with Waggy. No more ugly man making me think of bad things... where are my pills?

$1500 purchase price
$100 Flow Kooler water pump(still in box) ,all new cooling hoses
$5 new 180 degree duralast thermostat
$160 in oil. Pouring a quart in every few days until parked
$35 Autozone universal electric fuel pump
$550 in storage fees over a year
$145 Optima Red Top battery
$20 new battery cables
$100 Dana20 transfer case (sold it)
$100 32spline NP203 (sold it)
$23 case of beer to trade for GM 64" rear springs
$20 two nice replacement doors from 76 Cherokee

So until my $200 purchase of misc rubber seals and gaskets from BJ's yesterday I spent about $2800 over two years and the thing doesn't run at the moment(someone tampered with the ignition and steering column and f-ed up things a bit)

I anticipate in spending $1100 in axles very soon and another $2k-ish in a mild engine build in the coming weeks. $400-800 in the transfer case, a few hundred in driveshafts,a few hundred in seats, a grand in all-new wiring, approx 1100 in suspension/steering work

Its tallying up fast. The grand total will be pushing $10k in the coming months and I justify it by not justifying it

I just do it

They can shake their heads all they want

And I'm just getting started

VERY INTERESTING POSTS...

How about starting a new survey on how many times you have taken your FSJ in for service?

Dealer service and other locations.

In 31 years, I have taken it in twice times.

The first time was for a bad click in the front right wheel bearing after hitting a giant pot hole. This was under warranty in early 1977.

Second time was for the AC recharge also under warranty. Dealer said the fill valve was leaking. After the warranty ran out I found the leak on my own in the condenser in front of the radiator. Bad manufacturing weld that I still have not fixed.

Everything else I have done.

In the beginning....it was fun to save all the receipts and keep track of the costs. I pretty much don't care that much any more. I definately have broken the $k barrier and possibly pushing $k. Its a sickness but I justify it as R&R and family fun. I also keep my stuff forever so as time goes to infinity my cost per year approaches zero (see I told you it was a sickness).

I will not admit to any expenditures related to Full Size Jeeps.

Since 2001, we have owned 12 of them. 5 of those are dead and gone. 1 more to go in the near future.

WOW! Not as much or as bad as I thought it was.

Cost - $500
Engine rebuild - $1150

Then miscellaneous 'stuff' to the tune of about $400
Shop time - $450

Other crap and it comes to about $3000+

It's good therapy for me and well worth it.

PAYBACKS?
Automotive education - priceless.

Still much to do, but I'll do as much of that myself as I can.

(See, I can justify anything)

O.K. I'm a jeepaholic!! I paid $1000.00 for jeep. Spent $400.00 on manifold and tuneup. = $1400.00 and it needs about 200.00 to 300.00 more. Cheap intertainment in my book. I had one before and it was wore out and I sold it. This seems to be in good shape except it has sat for about two years, and I know we need pics, asap. Maybe I can get some tonight! Cheers

Did this once awhile back... probably shouldn't try again cuz it sucked last time... anyway here's a rough guess

$3500 orig purch price
$1500 lift, shocks, etc.
$1400 axles, gears, rebuild, lockers
$450 trans rebuild
$150 engine (altho I spent $2800 on the engine I had to take out)
$800 roof rack & accys (ouch, last purchase before getting married)
$100 tcase
$700 bumpers
$700 winch, lights
$850 tires/rims
$400 radio gear
$250 4-row radiator
$0 stereo (cuz I haven't replaced the one that was stolen)
$400 seats (maybe more, can't remember)
$300 OBA fittings
$150 optima battery
$800 aluminized exhaust, cat, muffler, etc.

$12,450

Plus a whole bunch of odds and ends along the way that probably add to another $1000 over the last 10 yrs.

Then there's all the repairs...

Michael

My other rig (since sold) ...

Bought "Backhoe" for $1500, locker for $280, tires for $400, CB / ant for $60, a set of new hubs (before I got smart and started buying used) for $150, and wheeled the heck out of it for a couple years. So $2400

Then got hit but a sucky driver in a snow storm, totaled it for like $1000 and sold it for $500.

Michael

PS: have thought of at least $200 stuff I forgot so far...

I have never actually sat down and firgured it up. I would guesstimate around $9k for the whole pile. Most of that was spent on the waggies...
